[QLD] Mountain Designs Fortitude Valley 60% - 80% off Everything in Store

160

Visited Mountain Designs Fortitude Valley today. I was expecting 40% - 70% off (like their online store) but was surprised to see everything was between 60% - 80% off. Employee said that there's no word yet if they're closing down but if we wanted anything else, get it by Sunday.

Some of the things I bought
DEUTER Futura Pro 34L Daypack SL $108 ($161.97 from their online store right now)
MD Merino Gloves for $10 (down from $49.95)
MD Merino Cable Slouch $20 (down from $69.95)
MD Glove for $5 (down from $34.95)

  • Is this across all stores?

The company, launched in Brisbane in 1975 by climber Rick White, has confirmed it will close 13 stores over the coming months, as it looks to counteract the effects of a challenging retail environment, including “increased competition, price discount fatigue, [and] a decline in national consumer foot traffic”.

The company’s stores at Joondalup, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and Toowong closed on the weekend, while those at Bendigo, Cannington, Toowoomba and Woollongong shuttered on Wednesday.

Stores at Pacific Fair, Ashmore, Bunbury, Moorabin and Warringah will also close, although the exact date for these closures has not yet been confirmed.

basing from other posts about specific Mountain designs stores, I don't think so

When I was at the Kawana store a couple of weeks ago (it was closing down) a staff member automatically asked a customer in front of me if they were a club member, then said "uh, it doesn't really matter as they are closing down". So I said to him "I thought they were as there is no stock/produts available in the online store either", to which he replied "yeah, they are liquidating but don't want to say that so are calling it an 'end of year sale' instead".

Bascially they are shuttering the whole business but are being a little bit sneaky about it by implying only some stores are closing (eg, Kawana isn't in the list) when in reality it is a staged business closure. If it was only a "restructure" due to "a decline in consumer foot traffic" then logically I would have thought the online store would be running as normal and remain fully stocked; when economic conditions improved they could then look to reopen store fronts.

Big savings in the Adelaide store also. I asked the staff if they were closing Australia-wide and they said the company hadn't informed them and they were as much in the dark as everyone. All seems rather odd.
Shame because I'd found them very good in the past with excellent products and very helpful staff.

I walked past the Fremantle (WA) store tonight and the landlord had placed a peaceful re-entry notice on the door and chained it up. Their financial situation must be getting pretty dire.

  • Does anyone know if the Chadstone store is still open?

  • Logan, QLD next to Ikea, store closing too. All their wooden coat hangers are like 50c each, and they’ve got big boxes of plastic ones for like $5 or thereabouts.
