What will the tent be used for?
That will help determine the style / material / etc.

      In addition:
      - will the tent be used for hiking (ie carried long distances while walking - guessing not for young kids) or mostly transported by vehicle?
      - Does it need to be particularly compact or have you got lots of room in your vehicle/backpack?
      - What kind of weather conditions will it be used in?
      - Will the kids be putting it up themselves or will they have some adult help?

I have a tent like this one from Kmart for $35 (http://www.kmart.com.au/product/3-person-dome-tent/1695801) - not suitable for hiking, but fairweather camping from a car it works great. Only spend the higher amount if you need a small compact tent that will used for hiking a lot.

This tent is really good and can be used for hiking. I brought one myself and can't recommend it enough ( plus only $79)

  • Snowy's is usually pretty good or maybe Gumtree, where are you located?

  • Given the updated / extended description, go with the Kmart or BCF suggestions earlier, and use the extra money for bedding etc.

  • gumtree. plenty of "used once, partner says if I ever suggest going camping again then they'll kill me"

Why not go to a disposals store and buy two hootchies/bashas? I’ve been using two of them for every hike since late 2010 in all weather conditions, they fold down to nothing and can be rigged to provide temporary shade during the day.

I am buying this for two young girls, not a couple of commandos . They do no joke , they are lucky to make their bed .

Motivate them to make their beds so well you can bounce a coin off the sheets. If they don’t make their bed well, toss it out the window! Last I heard from a mate that marched out a few weeks ago they don’t do that at Kapooka anymore :(

I bought a 3 man tent from BCF for my kids. It has a bit of an awning over the door which is handy if it rains.

You should be able to get a 3 person tent (in case of friends) for under $100 fairly easily. More than 3 person starts to get a bit big.

    • ill go with this one i think, thanks to all for sensible answers
