What GoPro Do I Buy?

Hey so my partner wants to buy a GoPro to record family trips. We want it when camping, 4WD trails and underwater recording with the kids.

Anyone have any suggests on what budget version to buy or what accessories etc. I should be getting?

  • I've got a Hero 5 Black, love it, can get some decent accessory packs of ebay for pretty cheap.

  • I'd say the hero 5 black. Up to 6 now but they increased the RRP.
You can get the 5 for around $400 on sale. I don't think the tech has improved to the point where you need the latest. The previous model should be fine.

    • Agree, the technology and footage output of these is more than adequate in most instances. You don't need the 'best' model unless you are trying to do professional stuff.

I've been happy with my Hero3 White edition.

Hero 5 Black was $330 on the recent TGG 20% sales and on Amazon Australia

Otherwise the Hero Session (4) comes down to $160 at TGG quite often

      • Hero 5 Black was sub $300 with amex at Harvey Norman and $350 at amazon au currently too.

    don't.

get one of these bad boys instead https://www.yitechnology.com/yi-4k-action-camera

longer battery life, and has a better chip in it.

    • Absolutely. I have GoPro 5 and I'm bitterly disappointed.

      • i was planning t get a gopro then i found this yi cams and showed a guy at work who's a photographer on the side, he told me the chip or whatever in them was far superior than the gopros. also noticed the battery life is a bit longer also which helps a bit.

as for attachments for them they will take the gopro attachments with no issues at all. in saying this obviously they won't fit into the same case as a gopro but the case can be bought off ebay no issues.

        • Would also recommend the Yi 4k (or 4k plus). The only slight problem I have with it is that it takes a long time (like 10 seconds) to save RAW photos.

    • Yeah. Just had a look at them. I guess I like that the GoPro is waterproof without a case and few comments said the Yi 4k case muffled the mic.

Yi 4K+ has a lot of positive reviews over the GoPro. Not sure whether I would get much use out of the Yi 4k+ (4K 60fps) vs the GoPro hero 5 black (4k 30fps). I guess it would be buying higher quality for the future but currently got no 4K tv or top of the line computer so 4K 60fps might just be overkill and using more data.

  • The type of mounts you want to use depends on what you want to use it for.

For hand held, I'd recommend some sort of handle, doesn't need to be long unless you like jumping off cliffs etc filming yourself. I've got a floaty one that fits nicely in the palm and helps keep the camera stable. Shaky footage is your enemy.

I've also got a couple of bike bar mounts and find they are handy for clamping to other things as well, although chest mount provides better footage than handlebar mount. I used the base the camera came on in the packaging and adapted it to fit my backpack checst strap, then found it also works on life jackets for kayaking. It was better than buying a chest mount strap for me. A suction cup mount or roll bar mount might be good for 4wd footage.

End of the day, it depends how much time you want to spend creating awesome footage, and how much you just want a bit of a memory.
