Maritime NSW is running a program to give people a chance to upgrade their existing life jackets or vests of PFDs to the latest for a discounted price.

The best one they offer is $85 after discount, down to $45 for a kids one. It's a great chance to update your tired, old safety vest. To be honest, I'm not the best at following safety rules, but I never go on the water without wearing a PFD - it's not like you can stand up and call for help if you end up in the drink. It's a cliche, but life preservers save lives.

The trade in program is run from, various locations on different dates, the site has all the info about locations and prices.

    kinda vague on that when I go looking.

    Most places say a PFD must be in reasonable condition and working, and that manufacturers may have 'expiry dates' for their vests.
    I did see a few sites that say replace or at least service your PFD every 12 months.

    My PFDs are about 3 years old, which is what I had in mind when I thought of their use by date. They get stored and cleaned after each use so that may help prolong them.
