NAB, ANZ and Westpac cancelling AmEx cards, Best American Express Cards Available

Not sure why but NAB and I believe Westpac are dropping support for AmEx, but with the typically increased points and the AmEx exclusive deals on OzB I'm wondering what the best options are right now? Aside from that, what's the logic behind dropping AmEx support?

  Personally, I love the service dealing with AMEX directly.

  More than happy to have a card directly with them.

  I think it was forced by the reserve bank, but more to do with banks not wanting to make less money.

  I currently have no cards with AMEX.

  So is the trick to sign up with an AMEX card on the MR Ascent program (such as the Business Accelerator) and then sign up for the Explorer, get the 100k MR Gateway points and then call to link the two cards to earn 2 MR Ascent points per $ spent on the Explorer?
