Load more results in New Deals update

I love ozbargain always have always will but the new update - load more results opposed to the original Page 1, 2, 3 & so on is unnecessary.
I assume it is to make scrolling on ones phone or tablet a little easier but it makes it difficult to find something that did not make the main page.

Please do not refer me to the Search Bar because I have always had problems with it & it finds what i'm looking for only around half the time.

If enough people agree maybe we can change it back because I can see the main page going the same way.

Personally hate lazy loading too, but looks like you can still go to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals?page=3

    • that's pretty cool thanks

    • +2

Indeed. When new deals are loaded and added to the current page, and when you scroll to those deals — the URL changes to reflect what the current page number is, and you can always go back to that. From my point of view there's really no loss of functionality.

If I want to scroll to the bottom of the page (footer) it's hard now.

        An option would be nice.

I don't like a super long page. If I want to go back to something that caught my eye earlier, it's a lot of screen scrolling to sift through to find it.

        • +1

Agreed, going back on mobile it doesn't seem to go back to where I was, it jumps down a few deals.

      • +8

Site navigation has been fundamentally made more difficult. What benefit is gained from this?

  • +6

When did this change? I hadn't noticed. Agree with you though, I like pages.

    • +2

Today is the first day I noticed it. If this wasn't posted, I was going to post a forum topic about it myself.

  • +1

Just noticed it now for the first time. I've never used any of the links in the footer and now I guess I never can again on the new deals page

  • +4

I just noticed it now, Facebook, here we come, I personally don't like it, makes it harder to jump pages, or until I figure it out anyways.

  • +2

Just noticed this behaviour now too, came to the forum to see if there was any discussion about it. Don't want to sound like a Luddite and say I don't like it, but it's a bit disorienting. I guess I'll get used to it.

The problem with this kind of page is when you click on a link not shown on the first load (i.e. below the "Load more") and hit back, you won't go back to the same position. It's painful if you're already on the third load or more. The only sensible way is to open in new tab but there's no guarantee that when you go back to the first page it doesn't reload.

At least please give us the option to switch back to pages. Thanks scotty!

    • +3

I second this, needs to be a choice, really really HATE the new format. Don't make me write a petition.

    • Yeah, this is the main loss of functionality with the change. If you could click a deal, and then return to where you were by pressing back (not just the last page that was loaded) it would be fine.

  • +7

Ok, so the /DEALS page does the horrible Facebook scrolling type thing, but the main ozbargain page doesn't. Just changed my main page minimum deal vote to -1 all good now. Guess it's a work around for now.

    • Sweet! Thanks for the tip.

Personally, I dislike this new change too.

It's rather disorienting when you have a really long page.

On mobile, apps are often suspended and terminated when not in focus.

when this happens, resuming chrome/ozbargain loses all loaded deals. In comparison to a static page that can simply reload.

Another use of static pages is, i can be 5 pages deep, and with a refresh, workout if there are any new deals on top, without losing my place.

      Same here.

Dislike - Should be a setting on the account

  • +2

I love it. It was always so annoying having to paginate, pressing tiny numbers with fat fingers. Long overdue.

  • +3

Hate it, please change it back, or at the very least use it on the mobile version only. I see absolutely no advantage when used on the desktop.

  • Anyone else having problems with upvoting deals on the new scrolling deals page? Every deal after the automatic 'load more results' won't let me upvote without actually going to the deal item page. Looking for a fix as I like to upvote something quickly, then later on return to it. Using Firefox and even without adblock it still isn't letting me vote.

  • +2

Can we have the option to choose between the 2? I often remember where deals are based on where on the page it is. This means I have to scroll through the page to find it. As in the URL at the top only loads the page - and when I'm scrolling not paying attention I'm not sure how far down the new url it is.

Another negative vote for the new paging feature.
Prefer the old static page feature for easier navigation back & forth between pages.

Perhaps a better solution would be to create a new account Setting to control Paging preferences, for example…

    • 20 items per page (default)
    • 40 items per page
    • 60 items per page
    • floating/automatic paging
  • +2

I can see positives and negatives about the new scrolling feature. Page loading is quicker now and I much prefer that but then if I want to skip to a specific deal that I looked at previously then I either have to search for it or it could take a long time to find again.

But the one bugbear that I have always had with Ozbargain is that I always view the site looking at the new deals list. I scroll through this list looking at the new deals until I come to the last one that I viewed the last time I looked at Ozbargain. Sometimes I remember the last deal I looked at but sometimes I don't and if I don't then I end up looking back over deals that I have seen before but have not realise that I had seen before. I would love to have a way to put a bookmark on the last deal that I viewed on the screen in the new deals list view so that when I go back to Ozbargain again later and look at the new deals list, I can look at the new deals up till this bookmarked point.

Problem still persists when using the new deals pages. No way to use the back/forwards browser buttons or jump to specific page.

Also with javascript off you cant get to different pages at all.

Definitely a big step backwards in usability for most people.

What the hell. So many whiners here (this isn't whingepool).
    I think it's a great feature.

  • Haha … came to this forum to see if other people the felt same way as me. Turns out, they do!

Would love it if an option to switch back to the old "pages" view could be implemented at some point in time.

  • I love this new update :)

  • I like pages and I also like "options"

I don't have an option to turn off this new infinite page format… sucks :(

  • +1 for either reverting to the 'traditional' page rendering or giving users the option of retaining it.

  • +2

I am also not too keen on this update.

What are the benefits for the user? All I can think of, is that the user doesn't need to do a single button press for each new page.

The costs are that it is harder to navigate to e.g. a deal that you found an hour ago, or the other day.

The meagre benefits don't outweigh the costs.

  • Just got the navigation change - not diggin' it right now either.

Suggestion: if site users come to the website (home page) just for scrolling/ time wasting/ etc then make that the auto loading page as its a great way to kill unlimited time and see Top Deal as recommended without the annoyance of clicking between pages. (I think this is the approach taken with the mobile app.)

Suggestion: if OzBargainers have logged in to see specific 'New Deals' then give them static load pages as it gives them the functionality to jump between upload times of when New Deals have been posted.

I like the features of both but I think in current form the mark has been missed in terms of practicality for site users.

I accidentally clicked on I don't like scrolling to change it back to pagination, but I loved the scrolling.

How do I change it back so it scrolls all of the Deals?

I've looked through the settings but can't find an option to do so. Can anyone please help?

    • Did you ever figure out how to re-enable infinite scrolling?

      • +1

I contacted the mods, and they changed it back for me within minutes.

There really should be a setting under our accounts so we can change it ourselves, but i'm thankful the mods and admins on here are super fast and helpful!

  • +1

don't like the change, slower on navigating on multi pages…

  • As per Scotty's comment in another thread, there's a way to opt-out for now (you'll see a button after a few pages of scrolling)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/353521#comment-5639889

"Infinite scroll is here to stay. There's a way to opt-out for now (you'll see a button after a few pages of scrolling), but future development, new features, etc will all be rolled out around the assumption of staying on the same page."

  • +1

New change seems strange to me from a user perspective, when you scroll down on mobile and it loads a new section, then you hit refresh and it takes you to the top of the new section not to the top of the deals page which is what I expect.

  • I for one welcome our Infinite Scroll overlords… puts on Toy Story Captain Buzz Lightyear slogan t-shirt

Thought I was the only person in the world who isn't head over heels in love with infinite scroll. It doesn't really get in the way of how I use this particular site, but it's unfortunate to see its tentacles keep spreading.

Saw an interesting tidbit in this video today about it reinforcing addictive behaviours - never really thought about that being a driver for it. Wasn't an issue for me personally until the trend spread beyond social media type content and became a real usability nuisance.

  • How do I enable scrolling back on if I’ve turned it off?

    • +1

My Account > edit / Settings > Infinite scrolling

      :)
