Fridges on Gumtree? Yay or nay?

I feel like fridges are one of those items people don't buy until the last one dies.

I've never bought one second hand and will be needing to get one soon.

I don't care if it's used, old or anything as long as it works.

    There, case close.

    • A big Yay from me.
Our deep freeze is still going after 10years and was 90% cheaper than new.
My only suggestion is to look for people moving selling a heap of stuff. That way you avoid people selling an item with intermittent issues.

See if you can get a free Christmas Ham included. Food poisoning is really an enabler to great deals.

    Watchout for faulty fridges.

Get them to turn it on before you get there to see if it actually works and has no issues.

A lot of faulty fridges passed off as working fridges, some with minor faults they don't mention.

    • I guess I'd just ask them to turn it on for a couple hours before I arrive to pick it up? Shouldn't be a big ask you're right. Good idea.

      • Turn it on, put some water in there, put some ice in the ice tray. It can be faked but you can feel the cold when you open the fridge.

        • Yeah but it's hard to tell the difference between cold for a while and "stays cold as a fridge". So I thought maybe prepping it will be better.

    It's basically a crap shoot.

You could get the guy that used it to store dead bodies and off meat or the student who just used it for cheap meals and etc.

Regardless I guess I don't have to tell you you have to wash it.

Remember to be careful transporting it. To to keep it vertical.

    • +1

That's not necessary, fridges can be transported laying on their side but you need to allow a day before turning them on once they're installed.

This has been the only way I have transported them and they all work fine afterwards.

Depends where you live but people emigrating are a good bet.
As an an example we are moving back to the UK and will sell ours, nothing wrong with it. (it has 2 years warranty remaining anyway so I don't have to worry about it blowing up on anybody)

  • Fridges are also things that people sell when two singles hook up and move in together.

    • yup - and we kept the wrong fridge ! Facebook buy swap sell pages are also good - lots of people selling fridges because they are moving. We picked up a spare 500L fridge for $50.

Second hand fridges are fine, I'd personally stick to Westinghouse ect instead of chanhongs ect.

Ask them to turn it on, you will know if it gets cold then.

I believe in only buying second hand fridges.

  • I feel like fridges are one of those items people don't buy until the last one dies.

True, also one of the things people don't sell until it starts showing signs of death

  • I have been trying to sell a fridge for so long on gumtree and it's brand new, no one even sends me a msg for months and I gave up :( Sometimes you get honest decent deals. I want to sell mine because mum bought it in white and the rest of the kitchen equiments are silver mental finish, it just looks disgusting and its an eye sore everytime walking into the kitchen

    • Googling Silver Mental Finish, ended up with "Silver Linings Playbook" movie.

I like your fridge already. :P

      In seriousness, you can either:

      1. Silver metal spray paint
      2. Wrap it with foil, non shiny side
      3. Or this: https://www.amazon.com/Brushed-Texture-Adhesive-Peel-stick-R…
      • Oh.. definitely checking this out, cheers

    • Where are you based mate?
