I currently have a x58 system
with 17 920 6gb ram and a gt210
using a x58 pro e motherboard.
I have been looking to get a used x5650, cl 212, 8gbs of ram
and gtx 780 used. my budget is 400$ for this upgrade is
there anything i should change?

just out of curiosity; what is the purpose of this upgrade?
if you are upgrading the system to play games then there's not much reason to go from a 920 to an X5650
if you are upgrading purely for the core count to use for compute related purposes I'd say you should spend the whole 400 on a new gpu as CUDA will get you a lot further. (unless you have a very specific cpu bound program)As the above poster mentioned, no point IMO as you are going sideways by replacing a CPU for a Xeon in the same family/Socket class. … and they hate to be OC'd
I wouldn't spend all your cash on a GPU as in my view faster processing and an upgraded mobo would make a difference holistically.
I would get a later mobo and CPU/HSF fan combo that still supports DDR3 hence can use your current RAM.
The you can flog off your i7 & mobo off Gumtree to offset the cost of the replacement a little.
Preferably at least a 3rd Gen i5 Quad Core or higher. There might be some good deals off Gumtree.
I have seen a GTX780 used off Gumtree on a good day for $150.P.S I do mention Gumtree a lot however that's what I have done in the past for a cheap upgrade.
What brand and rating is your current PSU?
