Why would we hunt for monsters when we can hunt for bargains ???

    • +1

      why can't we do both?

      • Because there are no side quests in the pursuit for bargains.

  • Monster hunter, damn that game was great on the psp

This is, far and away, the best Monster Hunter to date. If you've played any Monster Hunter before you'll immediately feel comfortable with the new control schemes and the streamlined mechanics. Gone are the days you need to make sure you have enough whetstones and pickaxes! That stuff is infinite now; you can auto refill used items and harvestables are no longer a random chance but an item that exists that you can pick up without wasting time dropping down to grab it. But if you're relatively new to the franchise, the early game is comprehensive enough to give you a feel for it without totally holding your hand. It implements the advancements from the PSP days (Such as mounting, new weapons, and a brand new seamless zone playing area).

As a veteran who has played every entry from MH Tri, through the DS ones and finally to PS4, I have to admit it's definitely my favourite, though I would've been happier with a larger monster list (Which sits comfortably at about 30 at the moment with promised free updates.) The multiplayer is front and centre as always, and finally reintroduces voice chat to make it much easier to communicate. The matchmaking is a bit finnicky, because you're only able to see random monster lobbies in the current online hub lobby (of 16), but I find that the global SOS system lets you get randoms much more reliably. It probably works fine with friends but I don't have any~

Speaking on the vet status, some veterans have taken offense to the 'streamlining'. I'm sorry guys, but being able to slowly walkwhile I heal isn't gamebreaking and due to the slow refill it's still pretty risky, and you cheeky c's probably left the area to do it before anyway!!

All the weapons have been given massive upgrades; the guns are finally viable for your average player, and even the horn has your songs on the screen so you don't have to commit as much to memory. Not to mention the weapon trees are partially visible from the start (with more unlocking through the game) without needing the weapon before it, AND you can roll back certain upgrades if you made the wrong choice. The best part is that all this stuff is visible in the game without excessive walkthrough usage, no more wiki-diving!

TL;DR All in all it's a damn fine game, and by far the best Monster Hunter. I'll be personally seeing myself to every corner of it :3

      • Started this from PS2..

kinda miss the ability to have to carry a limited amount of stuff like whetstones etc.

it's definitely easier to play now (probably for the newcomer) having said that, i love it..

        • Well, not being able to harvest rocks and bugs because your last pickaxe broke doesn't really have a real purpose when you really think about it. The amount of times I started a quest and said "Oh shit I accidentally forgot to get more ______" was enough to frustrate. 2 generation old mechanics being removed feels like a burden lifted, though I prefer MH4U's mounting mechanic because this new one is a bit unclear at times.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: can we battle underwater? i haven't tested this yet

        • @h4zey: No. There's no underwater swimming except for the on-rails swim-through tunnels between a couple areas.

          Thank god.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: next patch lol what's your HR?

        • @h4zey: 7. I'm up to the part where I need to search for Nergigante. I just made a high rank bowgun out of odoggo parts and I'm excited to use it (had to go to work ;_;)

        • @FrankMcFuzz: Awesome! have you clear the quest to get the HZD costume yet?

        • @h4zey: I have not :O Just been trying to get all the base upgrades out the way lol but there are so many! ;_;

        • @FrankMcFuzz: it's a limited time events, so make sure you got it!

        • @FrankMcFuzz: the mounting mechanics is a bit tricky but if you peek through the map it will flash red to let us know to brace.

        • @Rindy:
The game tells you which controls to press in the top right

        • @catbarf: what i meant is when to brace.

        • @Rindy:
In the top right, it will the buttons you can press but it will highlight with a little box when to Attack, when to Move and when to Brace. The radar flashes red (I think) as you said when you need to brace.

I totally did not explain myself well. Apologies.

      • Frank pretty much covered it, it's freaking beautiful and immersive! And Palico has a little raft so he doesn't get wet when you swim, its adorable.

      • @FrankmcFuzz Have you been shanghaied by a flying beast into the treetops and seen the dragon yet?

      • +1

Mate. What a wall of text! You must love hunting those monsters!

  • Ill join the guild when I can get the game for like $20. Though release games are like $60 these days I dont know why i bother waiting

    • this game wont be bargain binned anytime soon

  • I've played since the PS2 days and never missed one (including the Japanese only games) and I honestly am a little underwhelmed, I have no idea why. I understand the reasoning for simplifying it but at the same time I think I loved the complexities of MH.

    • maybe we can wait for Monster hunter world 2 or 3 as they are trying to get more new player with this one.

    • Perhaps it's just the monster count. I've found myself exhausting something that usually, seemingly never runs out. But I'm happy to just kill these monsters over and over since the gameplay is so tight now.

But as for the dumbing down, for example, I don't hate the inclusion of a viewable weapon tree, but I do kind of miss negative armour skills. I think some of the 'complexities' were 10 year old game design that had no place sticking around, of which there are a ton of examples. I think my biggest issue is just the content, which has been promised to increase by patches and free updates, and is likely to come back in a MH:W Ultimate or X version… Which I'll probably still buy.
