Looking to Build a Small Form Factor PC

Long story short, my Mac Mini, which I've been using as a desktop PC is on it's last legs. (Have to press the power button multiple times to boot)

I'm looking to build a small form desktop computer with a budget of ~$500.

I prefer using Window OS and the have ability to play casual games.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Define games? For $500 you will wouldn't get much at all unless you buy something 2nd hand.

    • Nothing new. Most of the games I play are about ~5+ years old.

Main use of my pc is just for OzBargain, YouTube, Reddit, Discord with the occasional gaming/photoshop.

Over Christmas I actually purchased a used Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF with 4GB Ram and 500gb HDD + i7 3770 for around $260. I fitted it with an SSD and 16GB of ram and it’s quick. If you fitted that out with a decent low profile graphics card it would probably be perfect for what you’re after.

I was looking into the Dell Optiplex that has been appearing on OzBargain recently. Might be my best option.

Out of curiosity, which and where did you get you RAM and SSD.

      • Everything was off eBay. The ram was some used DDR3 and SSD was a Corsair force drive.

Look at the Dell Factory Outlet. There is still a couple of SFF in as new condition for $529 running a 7th gen i5, 8GB ram and 128GB M2 SSD. It comes with Ubuntu istead of Win 10 but a licence is easy to acquire.

        • Thanks for the link.

Trying to move away from Apple Product. Not the best value for money, specs wise.

  • For $649..

You would probably get better value out of a Haswell generation Dell SFF Optiplex 9010 or 9020 from ebay, which we've seen for around $200~300 dollars, which you can add your own SSD for another $120 dollars, more RAM for $40, and a GTX 1030 graphics card for $100. So all around after upgrading and refurbishing the unit yourself, it may cost just under $500 for a pretty decent system.

The HP Wave desktop cannot take GPU upgrades since it uses a mobile GPU.

    No longer use desktop PCs.

redpc on eBay have heaps of laptops for auction.

Hint, auctions ending midweek often go for less , payday/weekends for more.

    • I'v already got a Laptop. Looking for a replacement for my desk.

      • Desks r Us ? ;)

  • $500 for a new PC is gonna be hard unless you try to source secondhand items.
Might be worth checking out logical increments as well.

Here are several options that I'd suggest on a low budget:

    Intel build (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/j6mJzM):

    • Intel i3/GTX1030 - $655
    • Intel i5/GTX1050 - $835

    AMD build(https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/QGtRNN):

    • Ryzen 3/RX550 - $761
