Refurbished silver appliances? Dishwasher, etc. or other tips for new renters.

Hi guys.

New renters here,

Got any tips on how to best spend our money on reasonable kitchen equipment?

I.e. would be great to get some stuff discounted due to visual defects or replaced parts. I love buying refurbished electronics.

What are some other tips on this kind of thing? i.e. should we spend the extra to get energy efficient? I heard they do some sort of scheme in Australian states where they offer discounts on this kind of thing so you can get the higher star ratings?

  • If you want to install a dishwasher in a rental, make sure you get a freestanding, so you can take it with you when you go. i have a samsung freestanding that has been in two houses so far, all I leave behind is a 2" hole in the side of the kitchen cabinet.

    • Luckily we're looking at one with a dishwasher already installed. We'll be keeping a limit to our stuff so we can take it away. Good idea thanks!

So why put dishwasher in the title?

Because it's the most obvious "silver appliance" (by that I mean whitegoods I guess) that I could think of.

  • Look at scratch and dent appliances/factory seconds.

  • My advice would be to get the basic appliances if you can; in my experience the more simple they are the more reliable they are.
