Cheapest Way to Transport 30kg Dog from Tasmania to Auckland

Hello wise folk. Jetpets quoted us $3500 to transport our 30kg Groodle from Launceston to Auckland. This seems extremely excessive.

Has anyone had recent experience with transporting animals between AUS and NZ?

We are waiting to hear back from Qantas that appear to provide a service where we do all the paperwork and vet checks (which we are happy to do) and is likely a lot cheaper. Air NZ only organise transport leaving NZ for pets.

Thanks in advance.

Probably cheaper to get a return ticket yourself and travel with the pet https://www.airnewzealand.com.au/travelling-with-pets

Edit: Oops… that link is only for domestic flights. But maybe there is some similar service with another airline. I'd imagine its the quarantine periods which really push up the costs when transporting internationally.

    • So there is minimal/no quarantining between AUS and NZ for domestic dogs. Vet checks at both sides. Yeah when we come back to Aus, Air NZ seem like they're pretty good.

Jetpets will most likely be your best bet. International transport of animals is always super expensive often due to the quarantine procedures that they need to go through.

I can definitely say that you and your dog will get the best service from jetpets. (From personal experience of working in the airline industry, they are by far the best company for the international transport of animals).

    • There's no quarantining though, that's the issue. Their quote was not itemised either which makes it harder to figure out where the cost comes from. We have asked for them to itemise it to see what costs we can avoid/reduce.

      • Right, if that's the case then try another company. Or tell jetpets that you got a quote for $2,200 from someone else and ask if they'll match it.

I can guarantee that they are making a butt tonne of money off it but at the end of the day they know exactly what they are doing. They will instantly provide medical attention if something goes wrong, where as an airline would call you and probably won't do anything further.

Maybe look into going on the spirit of Tassie to Melbourne and then going from Melbourne to Auckland?

        Ask for a itemised quote.

Jetpets are known to be the best in the business.

Moving a pet is expensive. You’ll find a lot of what you are paying is for crate hire. It wouldn’t be a standard size.

        • Yeah, waiting for itemised quote and we already forked out for an airline approved crate cuz little pupster is going to be like a blinged-up international jetsetter. Well, we move between Aus and NZ a fair bit…

        • @jonnochen: wait how many times a year are you travelling with your dog?

        • @knick007: probably annual trips, for the life of a dog. :)

for $3500 you could buy a boat

I was just about to say I could hire a boat and a crew for less than $3500.

        there you go, transport sorted.

      • as long as your pooch can do its 'business' over the side of the boat…

Might be worth checking this out.

Also get quotes from Dogtainers & Petraveller.

Don’t forget to ask for an itemised quote.

    • Great, thanks for that. Spells things out a bit more clearly than the bits and pieces from customs and the airlines and other assorted companies.

  • Interested to see if qantas had gotten to you

Sorry for late reply. Yeah my wife has taken over dealing with it. They did, but I'm not sure what their details were. My wife is still in Oz and keen to get over here and it was so much fuss that we are gonna have to fork out the cash this time round. The cheapest we could find was $3100 all inclusive.
