Centrelink - Relationship Youth Allowance

Hi,
Both me and my girlfriend are on Youth Allowance through Centrelink. We earn around $290 per fortnight. She is currently studying, and I am looking into studying. We are not classified as a relationship because we don't live with eachother, (We live 6 hours away from each other) (and to be classified as a relationship with centrelink the partner must be living with you). We are planning to move in with eachother in sometime soon. She still needs her payments to pay off her studying.

I'm just wondering if anyone could suggest how much our payments will change. Online it says youth allowance single is roughly $293 (we get a few extra dollars), where as being a member of a couple earn upto $445. Is this each, or would this only be one payment for both of us? Surely we wouldn't earn $890 would we? Or would we just keep our $293 for some reason? If our payments go down, how much by?

I don't care about earning more than what I have right now, as long as it's enough that helps me get around my day, with food, and sorting out plans to study.

I hope someone can help us both out

    Ask Centrelink.

    • I guarantee nothing will happen if you do this. You'll just be referred to the website.

      • Centrelink or OzBargain website?

first of all earn is a strong word. Earn would mean you are doing something to be compensated with this amount. I would appreciate if you replaced the word earn with receive.

and no it wouldn't be each, why would you get more for being in a relationship.

Not sure about Centrelink but I can tell you when you move in with your girlfriend it will cost you

    • I've been expecting the payment to be less. Since there will be two of us, and usually couples share money. Which really doesn't bother me as long as there's enough for our courses.

  • Why not work?

    • In the progress of looking for work, and study for the future. Of course I'd prefer to work over anything.

  • Just $293 a fortnight? I thought they pay more.. You can't even pay your rent on this allowance.

    • This is because we are living at home, and are students studying

      • 1) What if you were to live outside your home (i.e. sharing a house on rent with others), whilst all other things remain the same?

        2) In other scenario, what if you continue to live where you live but you aren't studying anymore?

        3) Third scenario - you live outside of your home (i.e. sharing a house on rent with others) and you aren't studying any more?

So in above 3 scenarios, where would you get max allowance and how much? You're still 6 hours away from your partner in all cases -
        assumed. Cheers.

          1. Centrelink has other types of payments for people not living at home. Including rent assistance I believe. I think if you are also independent (Away from home, you get paid more even if on youth allowance). Rent assistance can be usually half what you pay for rent. But would be able to pay that on top of another payment such as newstart allowance, or youth allowance.

          2. If I wasn't studying, i'd be a job seeker possibly on same cost, but would have to look into further studying, or volunteer work. or, nothing at all and get nothing.

          3. In this scenario it'd be 1 and 2 combined. Rent assistance, and job seeker.

        • @Wombat22: I thought rent assistance was for couple with kids only and your allowance wouldn't depend on whether you live at your parents' place or outside.

'Job seeker' or 'unemployment' allowance is given only after a few months or job search and only for a few months of unemployment OR for any period?

        • @virhlpool:
I believe rent assistance goes both ways. https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/enablers/how-mu…

job seeker, is given when unemployed, with regular checkups, appointments, monthly job search, and after a few months, I think job seekers are forced into volunteer work for skills.

        • @virhlpool:

So can you get rent assistance if you live with parents

        • @Triton:
You can't if you live with parents
