Bank Account for International Student

Long story short, I have a nephew starting university next month. He is an international student and needs a bank account. Does anyone have any recommendation for a bank account suitable for an international student? Is it as easy as just walking into a bank and open a bank account with his passport?

Thanks in advance.

Have your passport and enrolment details and your address details at hand.

The rule goes like this: You need 100 points of ID to open a bank account, HOWEVER, this requirement is waved if you have arrived within the past 6 weeks.

He needs 3 pieces of documents in order to open a bank account:
    1) His international passport
    2) His CoE (Certificate of Enrolment, he should know what that is.)
    3) His airticket stub (to prove that he is a new arrival. Make sure he does not throw it away)

Remember, you only have 6 weeks to do so, if not you will need 100 points of ID.

Also, I would go with NAB as they are the only Big 4 bank as they do not charge a monthly account keeping fee.
(Most banks waive the fee if you are a student, then start charging you once you are not, and without notice. If he wants a "set-and-forget" account, then NAB would be best.)

      His airticket stub

Probably should explain this line. Australia's immigration no longer stamps passports, and therefore the is no "evidence of arrival date" in the passport, which is why the ticket stub is important.

      • Thanks mate. I will pass it on. I think this will help a lot. Cheers.

  • Depends what country he's from

    • Malaysia

  • All banks should be fine, provided that he has a valid visa and other documents (e.g. passport and eCOE) ready
