Basic Soundbar VS Hi-Fi System for a TV

I have a Sony Bravia 49 inches Android LED TV which i use with the Sony Hi-Fi system (RRP $299) for a slightly better sound as the in-built TV speakers are pretty bad.

There are a lot of Soundbar deals for around $200 (RRP $400) happening right now. TheHi-Fi system i use has 2 speakers with a combined output of 50W (power consumption 35W) and I don't need very loud speakers; just after a decent quality sound. I want to know if the sound quality is considerably better on soundbars because i haven't used one before. Hence, would it be worth buying one of these soundbars or should i just stick with my Hi-Fi speakers?

Note: The TV does not have A2DP bluetooth so it is connected using 3.5mm jack.

Spend abit more and get a soundbar with HDMI. That way you only need one remote to control both Tv and soundbar.

    • To eliminate the two remotes hassle, i leave the Hi-Fi system on max volume. lol

      • But the chunky speakers. I personally like the slim compact soundbar design and hide the sub behind the sofa for some doof doof moments :D

My own personal preference would be for the sound-bar option because that's just my personality, I prefer to have things slimline and compact and not taking up lots of space, or having to run cables. Whether or not the sound would be better or not for the sound-bar versus a comparable Hi-Fi system I guess would depend on the system?

That's just my thoughts. I don't know a whole lot about sound-bars, only that they appeal. I don't have a Hi-Fi system either, I guess some reviews. Have you seen any that you think might be alright?

  • How good is the sound you have right now? Do you watch a movie / play a game and really notice how bad the sound is or isn't? If it ain't broke…

  • Soundbars are pretty ugly imo. Two medium sized bookshelf speakers looks a lot better. Make sure they are front ported if you want to actually put them in a bookcase or flat against a wall. And be aware that bookshelf speakers are a little sensitive to positioning. But I think they look better and sound better. All you need is two powerful bookshelf speakers and a powerful sub to attach to it, much better 2.1 option than a soundbar with little subwoofer attached.
