Acer Switch 5 12" QHD Touchscreen 2-in-1 [Core i5-7200U, 8GB + 256GB SSD] - $848.30 (C&C or + $8.99 Delivery) @ JB Hi-Fi

880

Not a bad deal if you don't want to stump up for a Surface which is twice as much for the same Specs. Noted the screen is not as good as a Surface and slightly (and I mean barely) bulkier than a Surface. Includes the Keyboard and Pen. I have picked one up myself and having had a Surface before I am happy with it is for the price.

You may want to re-install windows to clean the crap off it. With the USB ports, one is USB C and one is standard, the C is not a Thunderbolt port.

Reviews are solid for the device as well.

RRP at Acer - $1699

  • Whats the battery life like?

    • I haven't tested, varies with the reviews as well. It's not 10.5 hours as suggested. I think you would easily get over 5 from what I have tested to date.

      • Depends how much you are using it. 1 hour of web browsing is a lot different than 1 hour streaming of 2k video. 50% brightness uses a lot less power than 100% brightness.

Review here for the i7/500gb version, but has the same screen and battery life should be very similar.

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Switch-5-7500U-512-GB-Con…

Suggests it's not as good as a surface etc, but still pretty decent. ~6hrs cruising around using wifi.

Cracking value at $850 in my opinion.

      • Even better at ~$799 when using 6% off JB gift cards… see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/discounted_egift_cards

        • How can you pay this with jb gift card if maximum value of cards is 500?

        • @tacano: Use two gift cards? No limit on those.

        • @Maveot: you are right to use more than one card but I think JB have a 5 gift card limit on their online purchases.

Still, that allows up to $2500.00

I should add that I have made use of the RACQ option to buy about $1100 worth of JB cards before, then used in store. Just shoed each card on my phone with out any issue.

      According to this: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/17821-acer-switch-5-review/
About 4hrs of browsing with screen at 30% brightness.
      meh

      • +1

Same review also says 10h playing 1080p mkv file in movie app with 30% brightness. Comes down to use requirements.

  • Is it the same with this?

    If so cracking deal.

But I think this JB model doesn't include pen.

    • Yes it is the same as the Amazon one, country differences aside but the specs line up.

Yes it also includes the pen, I picked one up from JB myself.

      • Awesome, I just ordered one. Thanks Op
do you reckon if I change mind they accept refund in full? Of course if I haven't opened it.

        • +2

Can't see why not, JB are pretty generous. They gave me the $150 back today under price protection as I bought it yesterday at $998.

        • @Maveot: wow, didn't know they had price protection?

      • The camel3 said it hasn't been lower than US$799

Really wished if this was 8th gen cpu

    • +2

Haha, then it wouldn't be this price ;)

    • same…

This item might interest you. It was published here before, but now it's even cheaper:
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0752V44VD/ref=ox_sc_act_t…

Also available at JB for about $150 more.

      • Hp x360 is available for the same price at jb, smaller SSD (128gb) but i5 8250u processor.

        • The smaller SSD is no big deal, the big deal is HD 720 resolution.
With 14 inch screen that is not good…

        • I wonder if past hp spectre x2 is better than this

      • is the one at jb a yoga because i can not see any flex models?

        • Yeah flex 5 is yoga 520

  • Since many reviews put the Surface Pro 4 for comparison. There are a few Surface Pro 4 refurbished here at $1089.

Didn't know Dell outlet had those.

Just remember they are 6th gen along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD

      • Yeah, i'm not saying they are a good deal. I'm saying they are bad, so buy the op's deal!

  • Awesome one. But I already use my JB hifi gift card for ipad 2017…

  • With this type C chargers, does it work between devices?

For example can I use pixel charger to charge this? N vice versa?

    • It has a separate charging plug aside from the USB's.

People do say you can charge it via the USB-C. If I remember I'll check tonight when I get home if my Pixel 2 Charger will charge it.

      • I see, thanks man

        • +3

So my Pixel 2 charger won't charge it via the USB-C.

My Xiaomi 20,000 mha battery pack that can output 40W with USB-C to USB-C can charge it. So need that extra little boost if you want to charge that way.

        • @Maveot: thanks for checking

    • have you lived under a rock for the past 10 years?!?!

        • The keyboard comes off, it's a tablet. Hence the 2 in 1 description.

        • +1

          @jqckbob:
Then you don't have a laptop… Anyway touchscreen is great on any laptop.

  • I didn't realise I could get the discounted gift cards.
Is it possible to cancel the pick up order and just buy a new one? Has anyone done that before?

  • Very tempting. I was looking at the 13.3-14" notebooks thinking I'd prefer the larger screen and presumably better keyboard. Anyone have experience with this or similar devices, particularly trying to produce documents/do research for uni?

Also can the usb-c on this be used for display port?

  • A bit concern is that Acer battery may not last too long. For Acer it could degrade very quickly within a year. That's why I always prefer other brand business models such as HP elite or Dell latitude series. Those batteries can have maybe 70% juice after 4 years.

  • -3

there's no way I would pay $1699 for this!?? for that price you could buy a gaming Laptop/notebook haha Acer's RRP

    • Don't have a look at the high spec xps or spectre models then or you'll wet yourself.

  • many thanks OP - byod for my daughter's start at high school sorted. The school recommended the Surface Pro which are, its true, very nice machines. But double the price, particularly once keyboard and pen included.

  • Hi op, do you find that the touchpad making clicking noise when you type on the keyboard?

    Thanks

    • Not that I have noticed,will check.

      • thanks mate, mine is very noisy when typing. Apparently the touchpad is a bit loose, so it makes ticking noise.

  • Nope can't say I have any noise, not sure how the touchpad is loose. Mine is set, no movement.

Sucks if it is the case.

    Best of luck resolving.
