NQR Lilydale [VIC] Are Closing February 11

Went down to NQR Lilydale today and there's a sign outside saying they are closing down, they don't get the customers they used to (everyone shopping online the manager said).

Anyway, available across all NQRs on their current flyer, (17/01/2018-23/01/2018), were Four 'N Twenty pies for 99 cents, available varieties were:

Chicken Parma
Real Chunky Chicken & Chorizo
Cheese Burger

The Parma is the best of the three IMHO, and I know you're going to say that flyer is ending today but the pies were available at that price before 17/01/2018, so it looks like it might be a "while stocks last" kind of thing, (especially at Lilydale).

Anyway, might be useful info for anyone in the area.

PS. There might not be any Parma pies left at Lilydale …

UPDATE: NQR Lilydale are closing this Sunday, February 11.

  • This is a shame, because I take it as an indication they won't be coming to NSW.

NQRs 'clients' are not people who shop online for food from coles/woolies.

That NQR store is in a crap location, about 4000 years old and looks run down as they come! Maybe this might be the issue more than online shopping!

But thanks for the heads up, might have to head out for some cheap things. One would thing everything must go?

It was customers that told him it's easier to shop online, they all just jump on Woolworths/Coles sites, no need to leave the house/flat to see the light of day.

Oddly enough he said that business picked up a bit since Bunnings took over the old Olive Tree centre but I agree, it is in a crap location. Hidden out the back, no one sees it from Main St, only 100 metres from Lilydale Market but you still won't see it unless you approach from the bridge end of John St and by that time you've driven passed it's car park entrance.

Kilsyth store is in a better location but he said they pay a higher rent and get even less customers, (he used to work there). Kilsyth is the one I usually head to since you can do all four supermarkets within a 100m walk.

Morwell is great, bigger than Kilsyth or Lilydale, plenty of space but it's also tucked away a bit.

Pretty sure it'll be 'everything must go', they won't want to be moving low volume of BB dated stuff between stores, so I'm guessing prices will start dropping further the closer to closing.

Jordans Muesli varieties are still cheap ($1.49-1.99, normally $6+ elsewhere), Dorset Muesli ($1.99-2.49), Doritos After Dark (Tacos after Midnight) $0.99/150g, Doritos After Dark (Kabab) $1.49 (these were $0.99 at Kilsyth), etc.

Sad to see stores like this close and we end up throwing away more usable food just because of some arbitrary date marking.

      • Thats for the update!

Interesting as NQR is cheap products near the BB date, EOL products or stuff that didn't sell well, unlike coles/woolies online prices that are HIGHER than whats in the retail store a lot of the time, plus a delivery fee if under $100

Not meaning this to be mean, as I shop there myself from time to time, but NQR market is the lower end of the shopping customer base looking for cheap food on a limited budget.

Kilsyth NQR is in a better location, shocked they get fewer customers, as its always busy for me in there.

Lilydale must be on the way up now

  • Hmmm seems this closer is part of a 'larger' problem for NQR

    http://www.smh.com.au/business/retail/nqr-supermarkets-owned…

A loss of $3.5M a year over 18 stores a year, means each store while 'profitable' in the claim, still lost $200k EACH!

    • Oh dear that really is sad. I wonder if The Reject Shop will get interested.

    • That just sucks, one of the few really useful stores …

I really hope they pull through somehow, don't want to go back to being ripped off by Woolies and Coles.

      • Half price specials in Coles and Woolies have prices close to NQR, and probably better quality/brand.. If you can time your purchases well, you can't go wrong with Woolies and Coles either.. now with pricehipster, it's quite easy.

  • Bit more info, (from the Kilsyth manager), Lilydales lease was up for negotiation, landlord wanted more, couldn't reach an agreement, etc, etc.

BTW, Four 'N Twenty pies still 0.99 but now there's 48 less Chicken Parma pies … almost got one whole freezer full of these :P

  • NQR Lilydale are now closing February 11.

Currently everything in store is 30% off marked price EXCEPT alcohol.

Tomorrow or Thursday, discount will be increased to 50% off.

Lot of shelves are bare but still plenty of drinks, dog food, some frozen meals, etc.
