Is Telstra Cable Internet good and worth to change?

Hi everyone,

Currently I am using TPG internet in Strathfield/Burwood NSW area. During one year the speed is relatively good, about 7-8Mbps, but in the previous time, one month, the speed drops to 0.5-1Mbps, I use Speedtest to test. I called the customer service, they said there is some upgrade in the network system in the area, that might cause effect to the overall network. They also sent a technician to take a look on that, it got better for one day and return to 0.7Mbps after that, really disappointed.

I check on Telstra, they have package of 80$ for 1000GB, connection type is Cable. I think this type is much better than ADSL. The advertising speed on TPG is about 20Mbps (I never get that), I paid 59$ per month for this. The advertising speed on Telstra is about 30Mbps, I have to pay 80$ per month, also the setup cost.

So my question is: Does anyone use Telstra cable before? Is the speed good and like the agreement (30Mbps)?

Thanks

It was great for me in Montmorency Vic. I alwyas had a 35mbit download speed and no congestion.

I recently switched to NBN HFC with telecube and that is running well also.

When is NBN coming to your area? Might be worth waiting if it's in the next 6-9 months or so as if you're on a 2 year contract with telstra cable then you may only have the option of upgrading to telstra NBN in that period unless you wish to break your contract.

    • Wow, more than the agreement speed 35Mbps, really good.

Good point about the contract, I nearly forgot that, thanks. I check with NBN rollout plan, got this info:

      Planned availability: Upgrading the network*.

Network upgrades to improve your customer experience will add an average of 6-9 months to your HFC connection. Please check back for an update in February 2018.

So probably wait for one year, maybe? I think I should wait and keep chasing TPG customer support :)

Been using Telstra cable for 15 years, probably as good as it gets for Australian fixed line unless you are in a good NBN area.

Yeah its great, apart from the uploads

    • The NBN is planned in the area, it will update about schedule in Feb so I think I should wait until then decide. If it is more than 2 years then probably I will make a switch to Telstra cable.

    • I second this. I’ve been with Telstra Velocity for years and just managed to renew my contract for another 2 years when NBN is available at my area. I don’t want to move to NBN as I hear many bad experiences. The speed is around 63 mpbs download / 30 mpbs upload.

Make the switch. Same thing as what we had with ADSL speeds. In the past 5 years we had one brief outage.

Since moving to HFC NBN almost one a week…

    • Cool, so you use Cable for more than 2 years. I reckon I can have NBN network at the end of this year so probably I wait, otherwise will be locked in Telstra contract for 2 years.

Telstra cable will have NBN upgrades that you can go for when its released in your area.

I've been using Telstra Cable with a 'speed boost' add-on for about 3 years now. It's been great most of the time. Over this Xmas it became really, really, really slow (less than 1Mbps at times). Never been quite that slow before (previous holidays tends to make it drop to anywhere between 30 and 70Mbps) - but I'm guessing congestion or perhaps a fault in my area because now it seems faster than before now. Speedtest says around 110Mbps down every single test now, whereas before it would average between 70 and 100. I mean, unless Telstra is boosting results to specific websites - and they'd never do that would they? ;) Anyway I double checked it by re-downloading Star Citizen and it caps out around 12MB/sec so that's about right for 100Mbps I think.

Anyway, seems good most of the time and as per Telstra's NBN plans - if you pay over $100 a month you get unlimited data, so worth considering if you want some extra dl's. (I think it's more than $100 a month - maybe check that)

And yeah, as per above the HFC rollout has been delayed a bit - it was planned in my area for Jan-July this year, now bumped back 12 months to Jan-July next year. To be honest, I think I'm fine with that. Sure my uploads are 2.3Mbps atm, but that's fine for most of what I do and if it takes 12 months to make sure HFC isn't as horrible as they say it is (it MUST be bad for NBN to stop rolling it out) then hopefully that's a good thing.

I just hope when NBN rolls through my DL speeds don't go down (too much?).

I just find out that I still have 6 months in 2 years contract with TPG, so cannot bail out at the moment.
Have to chase them to get agreement speed.

Also do note that you have to give them 30 days notice. I had to pay for a month when I moved to Optus home wireless even after my TPG contract had ended way back.

Thank for telling me about this, will send a cancel request on the 23rd month of the contract.

At our place went from crappy unlimited TPG 2Mbps for $70 to 200GB Optus home wireless 12Mbps for $80 to 1000GB Telstra Cable 35Mbps+ for $80. Highly recommend it. Having said that had all sorts of issues first up with Telstra trying to get things up and running.

Btw for anyone who has ordered Telstra cable and having trouble trying to setup the cable modem make sure that you use Internet explorer or MS Edge on the phone. Wasted a few hours trying to figure that one out myself. You won't get a whole lot of useful info if you ring up. Better off searching the help forums. I think it was these two that I used to get things going.

I've been using Telstra Cable for at least 10 years. My area has yet to go to NBN HFC. The service is generally reliable, except for two occasions. The first is that the tap in the street needs replacement every 1-1.5 years (and the connection will deteriorate until Telstra comes out to fix it each time). The second is that it has recently become intermittently reliable, I suspect as a result of local NBN upgrades.

I frequently get 100mbps down, and the full 2mbps upload.

It is much, much better than ADSL, however, there are many complaints from some people on NBN HFC about a lack of speed.

I to went from slow adsl from tpg to telstra cable, was a world of difference. Yet to have a single problem.

I went from TPG internet 13mbit to Telstra ADSL 14mbit

Now cable was available we've moved over - you can actually negotiate a free cable speed boost 100mbit for free as well
My internet just flies! We get a constant 115mbit with 2mbit up

Doesnt even fluctuate in peak times - couldnt recommend it enough

Avoid Telstra NBN HFC, I had been with Telstra cable for years and had no issues.
Significant outages, including one for around 3-4 weeks, overall experience was terrible.

I was offered a mobile dongle, which was fine for the interim, cost around $140 which I was promised a refund, took around 10 calls and a month to actually get it.

I've just made the switch to Aussie broadband, so far so good, the local support is also a massive positive

  • I moved from TPG (5mb/s) to Telstra cable because I had enough. Best move ever. Now getting over 20Mbps (I'll update with actuals when I do the speedtest) and can actually stream stuff now.

    • Yeah, even with Telstra unlimited package 99$ is still worth the value, comparing with 1Mbps from TPG 59.99$.

  • Just got connected to Telstra cable this morning. Had enough with TPG ADSL 2+

    • I made on order a week ago, still waiting. Look like it takes 2 weeks to get the internet, which is too long.

      • Probably depends on your location. I signed up on Telstra website last Wednesday, and the earliest day for installation (pick your date) was this Thursday.

  • Im on the same boat as the OP, using TPG but want to switch to cable. Optus has better deal than Telstra, does anyone live in 2099 can give me some feedback on both of them. I prefer telstra but their deal is pretty avg and optus is more appealing in terms of pricing. any feedback is good. thank you all.

    • Be aware that your building needs to have Telstra cable box. I have an schedule technician this morning and this guy said that my building does not have that box, and because I am renting, need to get approval from home owner and building managament to install that box, so he said that Telstra cannot provide service without that.

      • thx for the reply. I live in a house so that should be ok. Did you get a better deal than just the normal promotion?

        • They (Telstra) asks me if I want ADSL2+ but they not sure about the speed. The current speed I get from TPG is 2-3Mbps, TPG use Telstra line and I live 1km from the exchange. so I reckon I would not get better speed.

To my understanding, the cable internet from Telstra (if they can provide the service to my home) is the best deal at the moment. I asked them if there is any discount from the deal, they said no, 79$/month or 99$/month to get smart modem, can connect to 4G network if cable network drops.

        • @haisergeant: thx, i will see if my local store can do any discount and let you know.

        • I end up choosing optus, much better standard deal than telstra. Just got it installed today, 30.16mbps for download and 1.33 for upload.

        • @big kev:

Congrats. I end up with using Vividwireless, at least the speed much better than ADSL :D
