Do you already have NBN on the property and is it HFC (Hybrid Fibre Co-axial)? If its HFC, then you would have already been provided with a basic modem from NBN (not your ISP). So all you need after that is a router. And depending on the speed you've signed up for, you can make a decision on how advanced your router needs to be. Because if you've only signed up for say 25MBps download/ 5MBps Upload plan, then getting a router with AC1750 is pointless. Technically you could just go for N300 Routers.

If you've got Cable/ ADSL 2+, then again you have to find out what your speeds are from your closest exchange. If you've got Cable but say Optus's basic plan, the speed is only 30Mbps anyway, where as their premium plans have a speed of upto 100MBps.

I suppose you'd have to give us more info on what you've got at home with your internet provider.

tonyjzx has made a couple of good suggestions considering your current connection type. Only other addition is to consider maybe something on offer right now through ebay with the code PCTECH (20% off).

What kind of internet do you have? What kind of property do you live in? What specifically do you use the router for? A vague question can only get vague answers…

IMO you should spend as little as possible with the tech so in flux

i wouldnt spend more than the above

i get that they units are 10/100 but adsl and nbn wont go over 10/100 anyway

i come from the view that I have a gbe switch and I have AC wireless routers hanging off it

if you want everything on one box then you're gonna be spending up big on an adsl2 nbn ready gbe dual band wifi modem router

Buy a second hand Telstra Gateway Max (Technicolor TG799vac) on Gumtree or eBay for cheap. Its modem uses Broadcom chip which is said to work well with weak ADSL. Then hack it to access advanced features.

    Reasons for buying it:

    • cheap, save your money for better router and access point
    • good Broadcom modem chip
    • nbn registered
    • bridge mode available
    • Gigabit ports
    • dual band wireless AC 1300+300 (signals aren't great)
    • unlocked VOIP with hack
