Dell XPS 8920 - Gtx 1070 SLI ?

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can put a second GTX 1070 GPU into my Dell XPS 8920 PC and run them in SLI mode ?

Reason: I want to increase my GPU power but would rather just grab another 1070 to add to my existing setup than buy a 1080TI and then try resell my existing 1070.

However, if there is much more benefit to replacing my 1070 with a 1080Ti then I will do that.
Opinions ?

Cheers

PJ

  • Probably not, I don't know for 100% certainty, but I believe you will be limited by the power output of the power supply which is often only around 450W, and the number of PCIE x16 slots on the motherboard, usually 1.

But pull open the side and have a look, if there is a spare slot and the PSU can handle it, then should be fine.

  • ok, thanks. I will have a look.

  • If this is the case, then would I be better to ditch the 1070 and replace it with a 1080Ti ?

    • +1

Probably not, the prebuilt systems only use the parts they need leaving no room for improvement/upgrades. If it only has a stock 460W power supply then i think a 1070 is about as high as you can go. To run a 1080ti you would need to upgrade your power supply to a 600W at least.

Might get away with a 1070ti…..

      • You can swap the PSU, no issue with this thing, you just need to measure the case and make sure the part fits.

  • Ok. Thanks. Might be time to build a new system :)

  • So you want to game in 4K? Otherwise TI is overkill.

    • I'd say 1070's in SLI would be as well.

That being said, not too many games work well with SLI these days so performance increase may not be worth the hassle compared to the 1080Ti route. As mentioned above you probably would need to change the PSU regardless and hopefully you can easily swap in a 3rd party one (unless the case has proprietary shape/bits on it which would prevent you from doing so).

  • Why? What display do you have?

No use getting your computer to punch out frames you can't show. 1070 is plenty for 1080p at the moment.

  • Not for gaming. I want to dabble in crypto mining. And I believe that apart from the crazy priced Antminers, a few GPU's are a good start for the home project.

I prefer to grab the parts while Ebay have some deals on tech. However, I have noticed just now that PcCaseGears ebay price is 20% above their store price for the same items :( so not really any benefit to buying off ebays 'pupil' sale for PcCaseGear.

Anyway… I have decided to grab 3x GTX 1070's if I can find them cheap enough - and a Corsair HX1200i PSU. I also need a MB and CPU. So looking at a basic Celeron CPU and an Asus H270 MB.

If anyone knows the best prices for this stuff ATM that would be great :)

Maybe I should move this to the 'Deals Wanted' section ?

    Cheers..

    • Out of interest how did you calculate that 3x 1070's would produce the best ROI?

(and if it was all for crypto, then SLI is irrelevant)
