    50hz refresh rate though…

    • 9ms

    • Refresh rate was the first thing I looked for. Kills the deal IMHO.

      • +6

LMAO You people and your refresh rates

        • Well yes, when we want to use it for computing, higher refresh rates tend to make for higher display quality. (I know some people say this is a gimmick, but I can tell the difference when using them, in terms of clearer text and better scrolling.)

    • You mean 60Hz? No TV today can't do 60Hz.

Was anyone ever going to pay $1300 for a Teac TV though?

  • +25

    Whoa… blast from my past.

Had a Teac boom box and VHS player when I was a wee one. Pretty sure they lasted a while.

From memory got them from Kmart before Kmart turned into the Ritz Carlton of two dollar shops.

LOL @ 'before Kmart turned into the Ritz Carlton of two dollar shops.'

    • I have a Hitachi Boombox that was bought in 1980, and it still works today. :)

  • Wow Teac's making a comeback on a big TV, I sold these a couple years ago and they had a pretty bad failure rate about 50% hopefully changed now and a great price.

    • +1

50% failure rate.. Hence 50% off? Hh

Cheapest 55 inch 4K TV I've seen with HDR.

  • +5

Is this TV actually HDR compatible or is that an error on JB's website?

Can't find anything on Teacs website mentioning HDR, even the user manual mentions nothing.

    http://www.teac.com.au/downloads/product_downloads/E5S1UHD_M…

  • Need 75 inch android deals.

  • Can anyone find reviews on this unit? I cant.

  • I don't think this is the TEAC of yore. :/

Might be ok for the price though? Hard to know without actually seeing it I guess.

    • +1

TEAC was sold to Gibson (Gibson Guitars) in 2013.

      • :0 Of all companies to have bought TEAC, I'd never have guessed it would be Gibson.

Fair enough. I guess if they keep all the old engineers, then maybe their stuff is still OK?

        • +2

Who knows since TEAC were well-known for their audio equipment, namely tape recorders and tapes. I guess they had to reinvent themselves.

Brands like Nakamichi, AKAI and Sansui have all been sold off too - to Chinese corporations.

So no, these companies are no longer the same ones of yore.

        • +1

@RoughMetaphors: from memory Teac = Tascam, which were known to make some of the best mixing equipment, so Gibson buying them when only part of their business that made decent products was for professional music isn't surprising at all.

The Teac brand in Australia is owned by a different company - the brand has changed owners a few times in the past decade. Very separate from Teac in other parts of the world

Today’s strategy… buy a semi well known brand. Contract out manufacturing for a generic item but badge it with semi well known brand.

People goto shops and think they got a bargain on said semi well known brand. Then they see the same item at Kmart or Big W but branded with their generic brand. Go home disappointed.

This Tv was on display in store. The picture quality is pretty mediocre and the refresh rate is definitely noticeable. Not sure who in their right mind would pay 1.2k for this when you can buy a LG panel of the same size that has better refresh rate and better picture quality for 200 dollars less

Even at 649 dollars I feel it's asking for a lot. What a let down.

    • Why would you need more than 60Hz on a cheap 4k UHD TV?

  • +2

Would the aldi 4k tv be better quality?

  • How does this TV compare to the new TCL 55" models?

Back in the days, 22 years ago or so,we had a Teac Tv, the highest range and payed nearly $2500. The TV was a failure once it went out of warranty. We had it a serviced a few times and I remember the CRT and every other component inside was made by Samsung. No one had heard of Samsung back then. Anyway I doubt Teac has any connection with the brand back in the days(lol Gibson?) same as the JVC brand sold at Kmart, nothing in common with JVC except for the name

    • +1

Agreed. The JVC stuff being sold at Big W is pure crap not worth the price for tinny below average speakers, rubbish built-in tuners and crap panel quality.
Not to mention zero software support and updates.

    • Wow !!! You had technology sooo far ahead of its time .
Now days nearly everything seems to be manufactured to a standard so as it breaks just after warranty expires.

  • +5

In my view, it is a very clever marketing tactic IMO.

That is by using well known brands to sell TV's; Teac, JVC, Polaroid etc.

The RRP off half-price is ridiculous tactic as if I had ~ $1300, I will add more cash and get the B7T (well when it was $1699 lol)

It's probably a real, cheap, no-name brand rebadged entry level TV panel that perform "fit for purpose" but in comparison to the name brands, it is mediocre. Then one day after warranty, it will implode.

I have the cheap rebadged JVC 4K TV and if you compare it to an LG, Samsung etc, you'll throw it in the bin. Although it had all the bells and whistles at the time ~ 4K 60p 4:4:4 8Bit panel .. sounded good, but then the colours are not uniform and washed out. Even after minimal calibration/adjustments from the settings, the image was questionable. It is OK for a PC monitor. That's about it.

Then you get frustrated with it after viewing other decent TV's then you spend the extra money on another anyway. So buy once and buy decent.

Spend the extra $300 and get the LG 55UJ634T.

It is cheap for what it is, but then the bigger brands have dropped by half over the years. They will follow suit; that is that they will sell a decent TV for a very cheap price.

    Get a real 4K TV.

    Cheers

Well put. I was in the same boat when I paid 630 for a 55" FHD JVC 3 years ago, it was a bargain at the time but for all the wrong reasons.
One thing that surprised me was it was on almost every day for at least 3-5 hours and is still working fine today

Just a warning, you need a table that is at least 103cm wide due to the stand design. (I'd go bigger just in case).

Now I've gotta have this thing on the floor like a meth addict

    • Crack house livin' yo

    • Head to the back of woolies and pick up some milk crates to make the coffee table and create the 'crack den' sheek!

      • i got it sorted, bought a side table of the same series as the original coffee table, so have extended it out further.

        thanks though

  • What rubbish.

This tv was at best $800

So, it is more like $150 saved.
