In summary, the CR-10 was a very popular large printer in 2017 which is considered good quality for the size/price and better than many other cheap 3D printers. Tevo effectively copied the CR-10 with the Tornado but added a faster (AC mains voltage?) heated bed, although quality control is reportedly not quite as good as Creality. Creality then made some improvements to the CR-10 design and called it the CR-10S, such as adding dual z-axis steppers.

I will mention that I bought a discounted CR-10 from Banggood's AU warehouse (great that they are stocking locally), but pricing is currently around $500 from them so you will do better with this deal if you are willing to wait a bit longer on delivery from GB.

Happy printing.

  • Good prices. CR-10 also has a much larger community (for the moment). I have the Tornado. Good printer with some minor tweaks

  • I also have the Tornado and agree that it's a good printer but has some quirks to it. Despite having the faster heating bed, I'd probably go with the CR-10 if I was choosing again. More support and it's easier to find 12V parts (Tornado runs on 24V).

FWIW, the S variant of the CR-10 doesn't seem worth it. The dual Z-axis in theory helps with stability, but in general the CR-10 doesn't have problems with that. The filament sensor is rarely that important, and can be modded in cheaply anyway.

    • Care to share the quirks?
I read about the salmon effect last year and also the x-axis carriage mounts for the belt being out of parallel.
Considering how long my prusa style printer takes to warm the bed I was pretty keen for the Tornado.

      • Salmon skin is one of the key ones. They also changed the drivers since release which means the smoothers aren't as effective. Apparently they're changing them to a different kind for their next batch which they claim won't have salmon skin, not sure when that'll happen or what drivers they're using.

Another issue is that a lot of people (myself included) often get problems with Octoprint disconnecting from the printer, which can basically ruin a long running print.

There's also an issue with the surface; in general it's very good with adhesion and prints stick very well without coming loose during long prints. However, unfortunately large prints stick too well and it's almost impossible to lift them without damaging the print or surface or both. Also, for some stupid reason they've used an adhesive to stick the surface to the glass bed that isn't suitable for 80+C temps. So the bed can reach high temps very quickly, but if you actually use it for even mediocre temps you will get bubbles forming in the surface which can ruin it and you'll have to remove it (a time consuming job). Personally I'm planning to replace the stock bed with an aluminium sheet with glass mirror & printbite on top, but it's a shame that the stock bed is close to being great, but let down by the adhesive choice.

        • Thanks. I'd read about the surface prob too but have been happy with my mirror surface and will get another made for the larger bed. I'll check out printbite too, should be a more durable choice than the kapton.

        • Have you seen the discussion about changing the USB comms setting to USB 1 or alternatively swapping out the board for a $44 replacement with unproblematic USB chip? (To fix the Octoprint problems)

        • @BlamJam: I'm already considering swapping the board due to the drivers, so hopefully will fix two problems at once. Might be a while before I get around to it though…

  • Good printer. Although ive heard people having issues with warranty when it comes to sourcing parts as well as delays on shipments. Purchasing directly through their Aliexpress is an easier experience though as your dealing with Tevo direct.

  • +3

Out of my last 3 orders with GearBest 2 didn't show up (xiaomi yee lights) and one item was faulty (tevo tarantula).

The tevo tarantula arrived with a faulty heated bed and a faulty mainboard (wouldn't drive the extruder). After two months of going backwards and forwards they offered me a refund of $40aud, I declined as it wouldn't even cover the cost of the heated bed, fast forward a month and they finally agreed to a full refund if I ship it back to them. The shipping is prohibitively expensive with insurance so I asked them to offer a higher partial refund, they declined. I ended up settling for the $40…

    • Oh that doesn't sound great. I wonder if the GB rep here could help? Was PayPal no help either? I'm not saying the CR-10 is guaranteed to be perfect (I have heard of some faults) but the Tevo units do seem to be more prone to manufacturing faults.

      • That was with PayPal assisting, I had uploaded a video of the unit not functioning as it should and showing it was indeed wired correctly. I even rang PayPal (90min wait) to find out what my options were after knocking back the initial offer and their response was that because I had declined the offer that it was at their (GearBest's) discretion whether they would offer a more substantial partial refund.

        • Hi ,please PM me with your order number and Ticket number .I will follow up this issue and resolve it to your satisfaction.

    • I once ordered a quad from them, it never arrived and I eventually opened a paypal dispute with them.
They then agreed to refund me, once I closed the claim, so I did, then they offered me half the price.
I contacted paypal, they wouldn't help as I'd closed the case, so I opened a credit card chargeback which was eventually paid.
My lesson, never believe what they say, never close a paypal dispute :)

      • I'm really sorry for the unpleasant shopping experience.
Please feel free to PM me if you have aftersale problem for product purchased on Gearbest. We will offer prior service for users in OBZ.

    • Tevo drop ship their items, so it wouldn't have touched GB's hands.

Did you contact Tevo? From what I've heard they're actually somewhat decent about replacing parts that get damaged during shipment.

    • Same experience with anet a8. Broken frame on arrival asked they offered me US $20 compensation or ship it back myself. Could not get me a replacement part even though they still sell the printer.

Considering the cost, I had to take the $20. Wont ever but something expensive from them again

      • Hi ,please PM me with your order number and Ticket number .I will follow up this issue and resolve it to your satisfaction.

  • Just ordered one - Lets hope it's all smooth sailing!

    • Congrats. Did you decide on the Tornado in the end?

      • Yeah I did, mostly on price really ($0.38) left in account now haha.

        • Haha, start saving for some more filament! I just bought a couple of rolls of eSun PLA+ to start off with.
