Monitors, I'm after One, Can You Help?

What I have:

  • HP 24" 1920 x 1200 @ 73hz (OC) IPS monitor, colours look good but not great.
  • AMD Vega 56 GPU, fast and G-Sync is of no benefit.

What I'm after:

  • Most likely spend many hours in front of it studying, working and gaming, so hopefully a nice image quality such as an IPS panel.
  • I will not be watching movies on it, or editing videos, or pretty much anything artistic.
  • 27" or more, got to go bigger!
  • Resolution of 2560 x 1440 or higher, I want higher than what I already have. I have a decent GPU, I want to stretch its legs.
  • 75hz or higher is a must, overclocking my monitor to 73 made gaming a lot smoother, so I wouldn't mind 90hz or 100hz monitor.
  • I'd like FreeSync, it can remove screen tearing and can improve performance over VSync. Not a must.

I've seen various monitors, yet some are no longer available with no replacements or are quite expensive. I've seen:

  • Nixeus EDG 27 (Not available in Australia)
  • ASUS MG279Q (Best price is $730, WHAT!!!)
  • Eizo Foris FS2735 (No longer available)
  • Acer Predator XR341CK (Over $1000 and low stock)
  • Acer XF270HU (No longer available)

straight off the bat avoid acer

  • Keep an eye on this site every day, as they update it regularly (kinda..) I nabbed a $1200 monitor for $460 bux just before Christmas. Was a 'refurb' but looks brand new to me.

    • Cheers, but I don't think Dell do a monitor that meets my requirements.

  • Lenovo L27Q from ebay

    • Cheers, though that is 60hz only and I'd love 75hz or higher.

      • no worries - excuse my ignorance, but what does the 75hz give you over the 60hz

        I just bought a L27Q, and, IMO, it's fxxxxxxg great !

        • +2

So it refreshes the image 25% faster, 120hz would refresh the image twice as often each second.

In some games it doesn't matter too much, cinematic games and strategy games as examples. But by going to 120hz, the delay between the action taking place and you seeing it on the screen is half, the image being displayed also looks smoother as it is updated more frequently.

So by going from 60hz to 75hz you get 25% of the benefit, but it is noticeable, makes faster gameplay look smoother. So shooting games, driving games and any fast games benefit from it.

          @FabMan:

so my L27Q has a crappy 60hz refresh rate

i play games that display at about 60fps

          it looks great to me

          am i missing something?

are we really talking about bragging rights or the law of diminishing returns? REALLY?

        • +3

          @oscargamer:

No need to get upset. I answered your question without any kind of bragging, I just want something a little better than your suggestion, what is wrong with that?

I've overclocked my current old monitor 6 months ago, and noticed the improvements and thought I'd like that on a new one with higher resolution, that is all. There are definitely diminishing returns, but I'd be happy with 75hz, just for that bit extra smooth gaming.

    • I have thanks, that is where I keep hitting the Not Available problem. So many monitors that meet the specs but are not longer being produced for some reason, or the cheapest is ASUS MG279Q for $730.

So I guess the best option is ASUS MG279Q from 2015 for $730, I'll wait till it is on sale again.

Go for one of those Korean 144hz/1440p panels with Freesync, Qnix or similar.

    • +1

I'd love too, two Korean panels I saw that met my needs just aren't available any more, not on eBay or any shops I recognise. I don't know what is happening, maybe the big companies aren't making those panels because they aren't popular or they are so popular they can't keep up with supply.

  • I don't think Vega will be a very fast card in the future (144Hz/120Hz/100fps)… but it seems to handle High Resolutions like a champ.
So while its not what you're after, perhaps a 4K/60Hz monitor might be a better match for the GPU?
If you had a GTX 1080, I might've suggested a 21:9, 120Hz, 1440p monitor instead. But then again, it really depends on which title, resolution, and graphical fidelity you're after.

    • Kinda the reason I want FreeSync, if it dips low or it hits the max I shouldn't have any negative effects with how it is displayed.

I wanted 1440p and 75hz or higher, I don't need 144hz, but the games that the Vega can run at 144fps, it would be nice.

      • Yeah, but even 75Hz/75fps is going to be difficult for the Vega56 when going 1440p or higher.

As long as you don't mind dialling the settings down from Ultra to High/Medium it should be fine.

As much as I hate to say it, AMD is really behind Nvidia when it comes to the driver performance and rasterizer cores. Especially one un-optimised games like PubG. So Nvidia has earnt their right to charge high prices, and if the roles were reversed, you know well that AMD would do the same.

So we need both companies to compete hard, and be able to serve buyers without the outside negative influence eg/ miners.

        • I understand where you are coming from but requiring medium settings is wrong. Typically going from Ultra to Very High dramtically reduces performance hit for little visual loss, then going from Very High to High also reduces performance hit again a lot, dropping to medium is really unnecessary.

I know this as I have a Vega 56, paired with an old CPU which really hampers performance and at 1920 x 1200 I'm able to run games at a solid 73fps, yes I know it is a lot lower resolution, but as I wrote, I'm using an old CPU and Ultra Settings. Also look at benchmarks online that test it on Very High settings, not Ultra, you'll see it does 75+ average on most games. Ultra effects at 1440p and higher does kill the card, that is true. But a mixture of High and Very High will be fine for 75+ average fps at 1440p.

  • I love my AOC AGON AG271QG but I have not tried the competitors, the freesync one is cheaper so thats a +
I have a 1080 and I know it does not max out every game at 160fps but I usually keep my monitors for much longer then I do GPU/PC's

Honestly I use an old TV (2007). Does the job for me in 1080p.

    • I scored my 24 incher 1080p screen 6 years ago for $60. Have ZERO urge to upgrade. Also am more than happy that 1080 is considered minimum to low so modern midrange cards can absolutely smash it. Bought a 1060 to pair with it and couldn't be happier. Everything is maxed out and it still runs perfectly acceptably.

    • I don't hate my current monitor, I just want a better one.

  • AOC AG271QX

$675ish at your computer store of choice.

    • Thanks, unfortunately it is a TN panel, but everything else looks awesome with it.

  • I think I'll try and get a Nixeus EDG 27" somehow.

  • +1

I have a AG271QX and I got it for around 600 during an ebay sale, I've seen it lower before though. It's a TN, but personally TN is fine for me as long as you're viewing it head on and not from a wide angle.

    • Thanks, I'll look at reviews.

  • I just bought the LG 34UC80-B for $718.75 USD delivered from Amazon.com, thoughts?

    https://www.amazon.com/LG-34UC80-B-34-Inch-21-UltraWide/dp/B…

    • I had a quick glance but wouldn't this be better with the higher refresh rate? Edit: Actually it's not because the one I linked is 1080p.

      • Mine was $549, the additional cost comes from shipping a fees paid to Australia for some reason. $169.75 shipping and handling fees.
