  • Is it 550 or 530 gpu?

  • Looks sweet, similar finish to the ThinkPads?

    • +6

Lenovo’s consumer laptops are rarely up to the finish of even the low-end Thinkpads.

You get better specs for the money, but lose on durability and build quality.

      Personally, I stick to the higher-end T-series (i.e. the T4XXs) or the X-series.

      • Are the Exxx models the lower quality finish consumer pads?? Where does the yoga line fit in.

        • +8

The E-series sits at the bottom of the Thinkpad range.

It’s basically the cheap small/medium-business version, with plastic construction. The L-series the next tier up, but is plastic too.

The T-series is where things get more premium, but they cheaped-out on the T470 and T470p, with a partly polymer chassis.

The Yoga 370 has aspects of the E, L and T series series. It’s hard to place it.

The T470s has a full metal chassis, as does the X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga.

You can see the materials matrix for all Thinkpads here:
          https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/6bvlb9/2017_think…

Basically, if you want “IBM Thinkpad” quality, go for a T470s, an X1 Carbon or an X1 Yoga.

        • @marlor:

My take on the Yoga line (other than being convertible) is that they fit the luxury home consumer market. The Yoga X is suitable for business, but I wouldn't want to use the others in an enterprise environment.

The use of plastic isn't all too bad for the T4xx - they're still sturdy.

The main difference between Thinkpad (X/T/E) products is that they feature a much better keyboard than the home consumer focused lines.

        • @Bedgrub:

There are only two "business" Yoga models (i.e. models that get the Thinkpad designation) - the Yoga 370 and the X1 Yoga.

The rest of the Yoga lineup fits into the consumer market.

The X1 Yoga is probably one of the best-built machines that Lenovo makes. The fact that it shares the "Yoga" branding with some cheap consumer models really seems confusing.

        • @marlor:
          Thanks for that!
          I do have a T450s at work, I'm hoping I can score an X when I'm due for a refresh :)

  • +4

Looks nice and decent price, shame that it's too heavy for me :(

I still consider the latest Asus i5/i7 Zenbook UX430UN the top contender.

    • +1

Not really same. This one is over $500 cheaper

    • +2

I still consider the latest Asus i5/i7 Zenbook UX430UN the top contender.

I can't believe they are still using a USB 2.0 port in a Zenbook. That's poor

      • The USB2.0 appeals to lots of engineers that have devices that can only work with USB2.0 and Asus knows about this. In fact, this is made with USB2.0, USB3.0 and USB3.1 Type C, covered most of the situations.

  • +3

What's the difference between V series and T and E? Somewhere in between?

  • +1
    • It's not advertised as a Gaming or Workstation GPU. Seems reasonable to me.

      • +11

I disagree. The AMD GPU isnt that much faster than the Intel inbuilt gpu and yet you pay a power penalty for it.

Its what I would call a 'marketing gpu'. Doesnt do much but makes a nice bullet point to draw in dummies.

        • +7

I agree, wasted power, heat and weight

        • +1

@picket23: Is it fast enough to run Civ 6?

        • @boohooimissout:
          No idea sorry

        • @boohooimissout:

Civ 6 will even run on Intel HD 620 Graphics. You’ll need to turn down the graphical settings and resolution, and put up with a 15fps frame-rate in the late game, but it’s playable as long as you avoid zooming too much.

I imagine it will be a small step up here. Playable, but pushing the system to its limit and just barely getting by in the late-game.

Why is there a VGA port in 2018? What's the max res of VGA?

    • 1080p

      • +2

Who still uses it? My last 4 monitors didn't have the port. Couldn't they have put DVI instead? Though tbh, it should be mini-DP and HDMI. Even DVI isn't in a lot of monitors anymore.

        • I am not using it but you can always convert VGA to HDMI very cheap

        • I use it in classrooms where the projector's hdmi output isn't working.

    • +12

Because a tonne of projectors have them.

      • Good point. Considering this is a general use laptop that's perfect.

      • How do you get audio to the projector?

        • You generally don't as it's projecting video, not sound. VGA is more for convenience than anything else. You certainly wouldn't be using it regularly you would hope.

        • +1

@cyssero: I don't see a point in putting in something that's not going to be used regularly. If you need to put it in a projector, just get an adapter that converts something else into VGA. That would save you space on the laptop for something you'll use more regularly. Such as an extra USB port, Ethernet, or something else.

Apple goes far enough in eliminating anything non-essential that even a headphone jack is considered only a "convenience" and not something you would use regularly you hope. And it's catching on. So I'm kind of surprised that a 3.5mm jack for which there is no commonly adopted physical successor is not on the latest devices, but a VGA port for which there are plenty of superior successors still makes it into a laptop.

Even USB-A has been removed from the latest round of ultra books and I consider that to be far less outdated than VGA.

    • +1

      VGA does 1600x1200.

  • +3

Great specs for the price, but good Lord those screen bezels

    • A near bezel-less design carries a hefty premium. It's a bigger engineering feat to slim it down.

      • +1

True. I've been spoiled by InfinityEdge

        • +5

Dell XPS still has a big lower bezel. What I'd like to see is some of that bezel shifted to the top so that the webcam can be moved back to a sensible place that doesn't look up your nose and show some embarrassing boogers. One day they'll reduce the lower bezel's size until it's just big enough for a Dell logo.

        • @lostn: not sure if I like it with the screen so low. It will be like ipad with keyboard case

    • If every hipster Youtube review didn't mention it, you wouldn't even know you want thinner and more fragile bezels

      • +1

        You're not wrong.

I think the same applies to metal cased phones over plastic which allow you to replace the battery yourself (something of more value to me than aesthetics).

        • No one is asking for a non-user replaceable battery

        • @Charity: They're asking for metal or glass cases (and being elitist about plastic ones), which by extension mean non-user replaceable battery, which in turn means you pay the manufacturer over $100 to replace the battery when it degrades. Or you have a slower phone, or a phone that doesn't stay on for the whole day.

Samsung stopped making batteries replaceable so instead of buying a $10 battery and changing it yourself to preserve the lifetime of your device, you pay a lot of money to have it replaced for you. All in the name of good looks.

        • @lostn: Actually, in order to make phone waterproof/resistant the non-user replaceable battery is probably necessary. It is not just for looks.

        • +4

@Fiximol: I don't drop phones into water. I don't shower with it or swim with it. Went through about 10 years without a waterproof phone, and never dropped it in water. Not really sure how you do it to be honest, without going to a pool/beach with it on your body.

Every phone has eventually had a degraded battery OTOH. A replacable battery for me has more value. The number of people who've destroyed their phones in water have to be far dwarfed by the number who've needed a new battery. This will happen to everyone eventually if you use it long enough. Dropping in water will not happen to everyone. I would never trade water proofing for a replaceable battery. You're eventually going to pay Apple $119 + shipping to replace your battery, or dispose of it and get a new phone. I'd rather keep using it if it still works.

But I've actually seen Sony water "proof" phone get destroyed when it dropped into a cup of water. So much for that.

Don't forget also that phones were metallic long before they became water resistant. So for a time, it 100% was about looks.

  • Is this a good transition from MacBook Air?

Edit: ok this is not a good option.

    • +1

      Haha

  • is that a better laptop ard this price? not a gamer

  • +2

    Call Lenovo's telesales number on 1300 557 073

I just called them and asked if they could help me with Tightarse and they put me through to support.

  • +1

The E480 is very popular and usually around the same price.
How does this compare to that? It seems that this model is to be lighter, but have worse GPU?

  • +2

Can anyone tell me which one is better for a student? THis laptop or E580 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355036). Thank you.

    • Yes, would like to know too.

      • +1

Or this one (dell from a couple of days ago)

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355442

        Thanks

        • From my experience, definitely the Dell if you want better build quality and after-sales support.

        • +1

@ifonlyiwasyounger: I have a Lenovo E570 (from a previous deal), the Intel NVMe SSD it shipped with had/has the XFS filesystem corruption bug, Lenovo offered onsite replacement instead of return to depot warranty that came with the laptop. First Lenovo laptop, first support experience, maybe I got lucky.

Edit: They sent out a Samsung NVMe and a replacement motherboard, tech was delayed (tassie) so picked up the parts, swapped the NVMe, didn't bother swapping the motherboard.

          Perfect support experience.

    • either are complete overkill.

get a secondhand x220. Or don't, more for me.

    • Depends on the course you're doing. Most courses a smaller 12-13 inch laptop would be best as they are more portable , tend to have better battery life and still have a full sized keyboard. Small is important as a lot of uni lecture theatres have tiny desks attached to the chairs.

Courses that are very computing power heavy may benefit from a computer with more grunt.

      • It's for a high school student. They require a minimum of i5 and battery life of 8 hours! I think they will use the laptop alot so I believe that looking a small screen may be bad for their eyes. Also, a 14" laptop or below usually doesn't have the number keyboard at the right side which is handy.

    • +1

Don't get a Lenovo. First thing you need to do is reinstall clean windows, otherwise you're massively bogged down by the software they shove on it.

Honestly, all major brands considered, I place Lenovo as second worse for laptops. A Samsung laptop was posted yesterday at a similar price (I think), would be a better choice for a student.

      • I can't find the Samsung that you are referring to. Can you give me the link. Thank you.

  • What is Dual Storage Support mean? Is that just mean there is an empty slot for a 2.5" hard drive?

  • Is the ram upgradable since 4gb is removable?

Can I say swap it out for a 16gb to make it 20gb?

I feel having only 8gb might bottleneck the i7 cpu….

    • Yes

    • yeah i think so, it's said a socket

    • -2

      No.

      4 - 4 = 0
      0 + 16 = 16

      • +3

        Or…

        8 - 4 = 4
        4 + 16 =20

        • Or…

          I got nothing.

      • That mafs was too quick. Has 8gb to start with as fiximol mentioned. 4gb soldered.

  • +1

TA any new deals on the e480/e580 coming soon?

  • After a really gruesome chat with Lenovo, here is what I'm guessing:
    1. there is no dual drive support. not sure why it says about dual storage support. The rep just said it is available for some V330 models, but not all. It may not be available for the current model.
    2. The difference between E and V series is that E series is customisable online, and the V isn't.
Not quite sure if that is the only difference.

  • +1

Shame about the rubbish GPU, the rest of the specs look okay.

  • Hey TA, do you have any word on when the new X/T lineups will come to AU, and if you could get us a sweet bargain on it too? :)
Thanks as always for your work!

  • I got a E480 Lenovo laptop before Christmas. It took 27 days to arrive. It has a crackling noise I think from the CPU fan, and I am going to return it if they accept. Not happy with Lenovo at all!

    • bought Monday and still belong processed. Probably will take ages as well.

  • -2

I dunno man, a 39wH battery….. 😬😬 it's a no for me, Nutting below 50 is acceptable for me. These days, chrome will give you aids, especially when I use it outside a lot Nd have to turn up the brightness

  • I was waiting on a good deal for the Dell XPS laptop. Can anyone please tell me how does this one compares against the XPS?

    • +1

Terrible in every way. Check out the refurbished xps', usually can get a great deal on a good laptop.

Now for my experience with the xps - first, the touchpad started rising in the corner. Fixed under warranty. Then the screen was a bit flickery, and color was off - fixed under warranty. The screen they replaced it with had a higher resolution (actually 4k) which was nice.

This screen developed faint thick 'lines' that were especially noticable on grey backgrounds. Fixed under watermelon.

Sadly that was the end of warranty. The screen again developed these lines after a couple months.

Most annoyingly, and persistently, was the EXTREME throttling of the GPU when used for a short time under medium use. It would cause horrible stuttering in all kinds of games or hardware based video playback. This seemed to be a heat issue (due to the low profile chassis) and wasnt fixable.

      TL;DR

Dell XPS. Good specs, looks good, good support and warranty - plagued with problems, needs extended warranty.

  • Laptops these days are better off getting an external GPU box with graphics card. The integrated UHD 620 ones are good enough to run basic games and if you want more serious gaming while abroad you'd be looking at a more gaming focussed laptop. But if you just want a good enough device that's primarily travel friendly, then at home just dock it up and have it as a desktop replacement

  • -1

Holy bezels batman. So much nope.

I get that it's their value range but seriously! If thats a 14" screen then the body must be 15+" laptop size? Pretty shit IMO.

    • Yeah it's a bit hard to look at now.

      • Ha, criticise lenovo, get negged :D

  • +2

    Any good deals on Yogas?

    • Have been looking for a deal on the yoga 720 which is a new nice looking notebook- but no luck so far

  • I ordered one of the E480s in TA's deal at the end of last year and it took almost a month to arrive - just be aware of this if you need a laptop in a hurry.

  • Hi OP,

Hope you can run a laptop deal with specs:

    1. Intel 8th Gen i7-8550U
    2. 14" IPS display
    3. 16GB RAM
    4. NVMe PCIe SSD

    Thanks!

  • Can you bring back the dealsss
