        Thanks for letting brodem know.

So… you're just waiting for mi mate?

  • What are people's thoughts on this vs the LG G6?

    • +1

      This is better.

    • +3

IMO LG G6 camera is much better, and that's what matters to me. Got me one of those today for $500.79 :)

    • +3

LG G6 = water dust proof, quad hd resolution, usb c 3.1 are some of the better features over this phone.

Huawei = dual sim, 64gb rather than 32gb storage on the lg

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8073&idPhone2=8466#,h870k,

Personally I'd prefer the LG over this one.

      • +1

Or the older LG V20 can be had for $380 from ebay vaya shop, same 20% code… 5.7inch QHD, 64gb onboard, dual sim, SD card slot, removable batt, IR blaster, drop protection. Nice if you're after a bargain.

        • +1

Yep. A beast of a phone for the money.

        • compare the size.. V20 size is massive

  • Mate 9 rules

  • just waiting for Mate 10 to come down a little more…..

Nah I'm all good, forgot I can't say anything negative about Cashrewards, especially on a deal that TA has made! My bad.

        • +3

Don't worry, I reported him to the bikies.

      • +6

I'd spend that $4.99 to take the partner out for some Hungry Jacks soft serve. It tastes pretty damn good and it's a cute thing to do.

All adds up in the end. I booked a dozen flights, hotels and a cruise last year. Combine CR and some of that on my tax and I got a pretty damn good payout!

        • +2

I'd spend that $4.99 to take the partner out for some Hungry Jacks soft serve

That's a lot of soft serve! Haha.

        • +3

@Porthos: We love our ice cream!

      • +4

It's free money just for a simple click through, why are you complaining?

        • No, it's not. In the end we're all paying for it. And 1% back is an absolute pathetic amount.

        • +5

          @Porthos:

I haven't paid a cent to CR, and can't see how I ever will. All I do is click through in one second and it gets me money eventually, sure there's ads associated with it, but I don't mind it if I can get the likes of 8% off Lenovo. When I bought my father his computer, that was $60 back, which came within a month.

Cashback is also determined by the vendor, eBay and many others cut all cashback rates a while back, TA is not the one determining this rate.

        • -1

@doweyy: Because I forgot, CR get paid out of the magical money pot and then are so generous to share that with us. The money doesn't come from the customer at all..

Jesus, forget I said anything. CR get such a free kick on this site it's ridiculous.

        • +11

Sounds like you need to eat a Snickers.

        • +8

          @Porthos:

The money doesn't come from the customer at all..

I don't mind sharing some of the profit to pay people's wages, securing Australian jobs. But I guess that doesn't matter to you.

        • -6

@doweyy: Ah the Australian way. Be a useless middle man providing nothing at all but taking a cut anyway. It's exactly what's made us who we are today.

        • +7

          @Porthos:

useless middle man providing nothing at all

          Trolling.

        • +5

@Porthos: Nothing at all you say?

A few weeks ago I used a coupon on CR with 10% cashback. My order was actually 75% off total. Not bad for a $100 $25 spend.

        • @doweyy: Simply because I have a difference of opinion I'm 'trolling'?

        • @Porthos:

No, because you're clearly not having a difference of opinion, you're attacking the OP for a free service and calling them useless. Intentional or not.

        • @doweyy: How I'm attacking the OP? I'm attacking CR, last time I checked they're not a person.

Also with that thinking, any time any one negs a company on a deal that's a personal attack and 'trolling' that company?

        • @Porthos:

Forget I said anything, keep it that we have different opinions if that’s what you want.

        • @doweyy: No, you're the one who made the claim. Now justify it.

        • @Porthos:

Sure, as you know, the OP works for CR. If you say that the middle man is useless, you’re calling the OP useless in the process for all the work they do to bring their users a saving. That’s attacking the OP, as well as the company in question.

It’s not like any of these insurance companies do it for us, or the comparison companies, I don’t see you bad mouthing them?

          Leave it there.

        • -6

@doweyy: Wow, massive stretch of the bow there to try and justify your point. Sorry, forgot we live in a society now where you can't say anything about anything due to it may offend someone. I'm going to assume you've never said a bad word about a company in your life? Because you know, that's then a personal insult to everyone who works there.

My point then about saying anything negative about a company on a deal at all then is a personal attack on that person as well, I'll keep that in mind for future then for anyone negging a deal from now on (more so a deal which is posted by a rep).

Do insurance companies and comparison sites get such a prominent free kick on this site (like CR do under any deal that they have a cashback with their cashback button under the main deal link?) No? Then your point is invalid.

Nah I'm alright to not leave it here, as you're fine with attacking me because I say anything negative about CR, which to you is therefore an attack on TA. Oh, the irony is strong with you.

        • +1

@Porthos: Porthos do you love the op TA?

  • +7

Does this have a notification led?

    • +1

It does, lots of colours too, but I found it pretty unreliable. Also does a fade in-out thing, not a constant light so I can't just glance at the phone to check, have to stare at it for 3 seconds waiting to see if it fades in. Dunno if it's the same on all Android phones.

Unless privacy/security means nothing to you, do not buy huawei.

    • +11

Not really fair to single out Huawei for having ties. The Snowden leaks confirmed that Google themselves cooperate with foreign government agencies, so by your thinking we shouldn't touch anything Google including Android. Same applies to Apple.

  • +5

Processor is a HiSilicon Kirin 960? I've never heard of that

    • +2

There are 4 chipset makers, Samsung Exynos, Qualcom SnapDragon, Mediatek MTK and guess what company creates HiSilicon Kirin?

    • +1

HiSilicon is fully owned by Huawei. Huawei is No. 3 smartphone maker in the world and the first Chinese phone maker

      • +1

Thanks, didn't know. Not sure why I was negged.

        • My tablet uses the 950 variant. Works good.

Huawei Mediapad M3 8.4" WiFi only model.

          Bought about a year ago.

      • -1

I remember reading that it overtook apple to become world number 2?

    • The 960 chip is a beast. Even though a year or so old it's only the tiniest fraction slower than the current gen cpu's.

  • Great phone I must say. I'll buy if I dont already have a Mate 10 from last ebay deal.

  • Bought one of these last week from the other deal for a family member and low and behold, another phone died (must be because the last set of phones were all bought at similar times) so bought this phone again.

    Thanks!

  • This, or the Xiaomi Mi 5s plus for $100 less?
Are there any other phones in this range to consider? Not sold on the LG G6 because of battery life

    • MI 5S wont have B28.

  • Worth going Mate 9 Pro for bit more than $100 extra? I watch stuff lots…

    • +2

      I like to watch also.

Here's my mini review after owning for about 6 months:
    * Great battery life, I like being able to do 1 or 2 hours navigation and still have it last the whole day. When I drove interstate it lasted about 5 hours with Google Maps and screen on 100% brightness the whole time.
    * Super fast fingerprint unlock
    * Very fast charging on it's own custom charger, a bit faster than normal on high power USB-C chargers.
    * During the first few months I found the phone a bit laggy on occasion, but last few months it's been great.
    * Camera seems a bit hit and miss. Reviewers say it's great or awful. I found with the standard lens it's as awful as any budget level phone. If I press the wide-aperture icon can get some really great shots. I think it uses a second lens, not sure.
    * Screen res a bit low at 1080p. Works well for me but not as crisp as typical flagship screens, especially for small text.
    * Comes with screen protector already applied, and a case that protects corners and back. I like it because it keeps the phone nice and thin in my pocket. Could still crack the screen if you dropped it on front edge. I appreciated saving about $40 and hassle not having to buy a case and screen protector.
    * UI is pretty basic, nothing slick like you get on a flagship phone.
    * Comfortable to hold.

I really love this phone - ethically made, great specs and I was hugely surprised at the quality and finish of a brand I didn't really respect before buying.

I'm a sysadmin and I use it for work stuff, had it for nearly a year - remoting into servers, running diagnostics and all the usual stuff - the battery is great, specs haven't left me wanting yet and I'm happy to support an ethical phone manufacturer.

happy to support an ethical phone manufacturer

I'm interested in this reasoning (genuinely interested)?

      • This one was the short-form: http://www.thegoodshoppingguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Home-Office_MobilePhones_long-table-RESIZED.jpg

        http://www.thegoodshoppingguide.com/ethical-mobile-phones/

My big one is child slavery - if you are wanting to avoid phones/batteries that have child slavery somewhere in the production line, Samsung, Apple and Sony are ones to avoid.

However, it's kind of weird. It seems that most companies get a different supply of Colbolt for their tablet batteries as they do their phones, so Huawei doesn't have a great rating for tablets, but Apple's is pretty clean - it's difficult to get the information you need to make a fully informed decision to be honest, but I try…

FairPhone is obviously the most ideal choice, but doesn't offer an array of phones, unfortunately and it's fairly mid-spec to cater to the majority.

EDIT: wow, just been researching a little further and it appears Huawei isn't as clean as I had been lead to believe…I'm just going FairPhone from now on - I can't justify the idea that I might be supporting this shit.

        https://guide.ethical.org.au/company/?company=5958

        • Thanks. Interesting, as with most products it seems like it's difficult to find a decent 'ethical' option. FairPhone looks interesting, I do like the idea of a modular phone, but seems like it's still quite early days for them…
Might be stuck with picking the best of a bad bunch for now…
