I think I've seen every Xiaomi product BUT the lights go on sale. REEEEEEEEEEEEE.

    • +1

you forgot to turn the lights on.
That's probably why you couldn't see it.

  • Something to note with this kettle, while it is very good especially for the price, the max temp you can set it to is 90 degrees. An important consideration if you like your tea very hot.

    • How do you set it? Is it done by smart phone or is there a dial?

      • Set by phone, via Bluetooth.

    • +6

      So it can't boil water?

      • I guess so. I know boiling point of water is 100, but it gets plenty bubbly and hot at 90. Not defending this design decision though, I would much prefer if it went to 100.

        • Are you sure it doesn't go to 100 and that isn't just the max keep warm setting? Most temp controlled kettles have a boil setting and a keep warm setting below 100 (100 keep warm would boil the kettle dry).

        • @wolfshooter:
Yes. It does first boil to 100 degrees then keep warm. From my memory, the max keep warm duration is 8 hours

        • @kungbernard:
That's interesting to know, my partner swears up and down that this kettle doesn't get as hot as the old one, I connected that with the fact that the app only goes up to 90. But maybe it's the case that the old kettle actually went a bit over 100, rather than the new one not reaching 100.

        • @wolfshooter:
Ah yeah, I guess I was hoping for more of a 'sterilisation' feature, like it'd keep it between 95-100 for five minutes then switch off.

        • Bullshit.

It does go up to 100!

        • +1

@chawbery: No kettle goes over 100degC unless it is a pressure cooker.

        • @quasims:

Just reporting what we've found. The choice review for our last kettle did note that it would exceed the preset temperatures by 5-7 degrees.

I can't believe I've talked this much about kettles.

        • @chawbery:
Just commented as that'd defy the laws of thermodynamics. At atmospheric pressure water boils at 100degC and temp remains constant until all water boils off. But we may be talking different things here.

        • +1

          @quasims:
Huh no you're right, I didn't know that.

    • +2

Wait, it doesn't even boil the water?

      • What's next? A Xiaomi iron that doesn't iron?

      • Not really, it first boil to 100degrees and keep warm base on the settings from the app, you can always reboil by pressing the button on the kettle or control via the app.

The only con of this kettle is it doesn’t have a transparent volume indicator. You will need to open the lid to find out the remaining water.

      • I watched a video review. The guy set the temperature in the app. I saw him slide it up to 99 degrees. Chawbery could be presenting 'alternative facts'.

        • Don't know what to say, mine only goes to 90.

        • @chawbery:

Here's what my app looks like, max temp is 90. The 'custom' icon is a changeable slot for other lower than 90 settings:

          https://imgur.com/a/1boBy

        • @chawbery: The way I interpret it is, it boils to 100, but you can't maintain it above 90. Which I think is more than hot enough. If it stayed at 100 degrees for hours, the water would evaporate into steam and you'd have nothing left. Obviously it has to stay below boiling temp.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIhG85fYKQ8

Look at this guy's video and skip to 1:20. He has the current temp at 99, and varying points above 90. Which means it does go above 90, you just can't maintain it above 90 after initial boiling.

Also have you tried pressing the Custom button? What options does that give you?

You also have it at "Warm up to the set temperature" instead of "cool down to the set temperature" implying that the current temp is below 90. Have you tried setting it to "cool down" just after it's boiled, and see if anything changes?

        • @lostn:
The hope was that we could use the app to set a quasi-sterilisation mode. Our last kettle had this feature so we figured a 'smart' Bluetooth kettle could do the same. The mode ideally would be 100 degrees for five minites, or 95-100 for five minites. But two things have prevented that, the max 'stay warm' temp being 90, and the minimum 'stay warm' time being one hour.

Custom button doesn't seem to do anything, it's possibly so that you can use the slider below (the icon for custom looks like the slider).

I'll give the cool down setting a go.

    • chinese know how to make tea, so if it needed to be hotter they would have made it so ….

if you water hotter for another reason , then it might not be the kettle for you

    • I've got this too - there's two buttons, one boils (as in goes to 100oC) and goes off and the other heats up to tea level and keeps it at that temp. Tea temp goes max 90oC.

    • Can you set any temp?

    • It looks like one of the marketing img from GB page addresses this concern. Basically, it boils water and and keeps it hot at a predefined temp.

  • Looking to get a kettle myself but can someone tell me what's special about this one?

    • Bluetooth and style with variable temperature. Comes with a free chinese laborer who fills it with water every time it empties. Included in price for 1 year only

      • yep foreign student, sleeps on the floor of your kitchen …. it's cheaper for them than accommodation in melb or syd, so bris and Adelaide might be excluded.

    • automatically switches off once water comes to a boil

      • +7

Hmm. I hate when kettles keep boiling until it all evaporates into steam. Those are so 2017.

    • -1

      It doesn't boil water

      • Are you sure?

        • +4

          it does on mt everest.

        • @garage sale: where do you plug it in on everest?

        • @thevofa:
          A very long extension cord.

        • the xiaomi 20,000 mah power bank you also bought so you knew your phone was charged for that selfie.

Xiaomo, the cradle to grave life style company …. online dating will be next as they find you a partner who also likes to buy their stuff and will ensure your kids also like it ….

hope she's a hottie and can read chinese instrctions, and knows how to set up the Xiaomi stuff I haven't even unpacked yet.

    Ahhh…. Girlfriend might kill me….

Be strong! Wait for wifi version…

    • Better off waiting for the wife version.

    • +1

Turn your Girl Friend 1.0 into Wife 2.0 and you're done ~~

  • Can you tell me if this needs a gateway?
Really interested in a kettle that I can switch on to boil over wifi.
Weirdly the description says you use bluetooth through the xiaomi app…
Confused if it's wifi or bluetooth controlled.

    • It's Bluetooth, doesn't need the gateway which is wifi+zigbee.

    • Use a wifi switch…

      • +1

yeah I've got one on order.
Would prefer to not have to switch the kettle to boil and then turn it off at the wifi switch.
Would be far a far more elegant solution to have a wifi enabled kettle

        • Kettles generally take 3-5 mins to boil. Might take more effort to take out your phone and start it esp if there's no water in it…

        • +1
        • +1

@moore22: yeah thinking about it from a tea drinker's perspective I can see the benefit - reheat/boil from the couch, then pour when ready. Shame it's not glass.

        • @wolfshooter: ideally the base would connect to a water pipe and maintain water level with a sophisticated non drip blah blah.

          But that seems excessive too.

        • they usually switch off once water has boiled.

  • +2

comments at the bottom of the item says it cant be used on 240v (Australia).. I wonder why?

    • +2

Because 240v is bigger than what it said on description of 220v, precaution will be just state a 'No' rather to find out that International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standardize all into consistent 230V for (220v, 230v & 240v) see here

  • -1

And from what I understand you must use the app to boil the kettle with no manual switch.

    • oops.. the app crashed, let's start again ~~

    • +3

There's two touch-sensitive buttons on the inside of the bottom of the handle. The button closest to the jug sets the jug to boil, while the other one sets it to whatever time and temp of the 'keep warm' setting you've set in the app. Neither require the app to use, only the keep warm button needs the app to change its settings.

      • Thanks, good to know, I read that in one of the comments, they probably hadn't worked it out yet.

    • That's not true. There's two buttons on the handle.

    • phone battery flat …. no hot water ……

  • +1

From what I can gather, there is nothing special about this "kettle" whatsoever.

I had a quick flick through the gearbest reviews, just in case I'd missed some hidden functionality. I gave up when I got to this review:

"I like a lot how xiaomi designs his products…"

    lol

    • +1

Hahaha I wouldn't trust gearbest reviews, people just give half-assed ones to get credit

    • Bluetooth! Everything is better with Bluetooth, even if you don't use it (toothbrush)

  • WTF. Expired already

    • +1

      Sorry guys. I bought 20.

      • You should get a hot water tap installed in your bath. Might be easier

      • -2

        Hi bro

    • Yeah. I had an internal debate on whether or not to get it, and reluctantly decided yes. But expired now.

Ideally I want a $30 kettle of good build quality, no rust. I don't need smart features because they're gimmicks. The keep warm setting could easily have been implemented as a dial on the kettle itself, like toasters do when you select how burned you want it. If Xiaomi made toasters, they'd probably move the dial to the app.

      • A Xiaomi toaster would probably also purify the air as it toasts

      • Kogan make one that fits your description. I have it and it's pretty great.

      • reality is HM, myer, DJ, Goodguys are places for things like kettles and toasters …. imagine the hassle of sending a kettle back to china ….

element on my Breville toaster burnt out, JB replaced it on the spot with a swap over under the warranty period and sent old one back to breville.

Are you going to wait 45 days for new kettle from china … no you but on locally to make due and if replacement arrives, now you have 2 kettles …..

this is as bad as mobile phones, warranties and having spare phone but white good take up more space.

        • Are you going to wait 45 days for new kettle from china … no you but on locally to make due and if replacement arrives, now you have 2 kettles

Or you have a garage sale to sell off unwanted goods, which is what I gather you do a lot.

  • +4

Wow ozbargain has turned into a xiaomi/gearbest/zapals/<insert other chinese distributors here>… advertising service. Bahhh

    • I agree, but I suppose I can't really complain since I don't contribute very frequently.

    • +1

Why is that a bad thing? I've been lingering around here for years now, and Xiaomi turned this place into a great deals daily place instead of a great deal every couple days on eneloops or dick Smith stuff

    • Competition is very healthy. Companies like Philips, Lifx and Wemo have smart products priced well over $60, but our good mates at Xiaomi are pricing equivalent products for under $20.

How can you have a problem with that?

      • Competition is definitely healthy. I wouldn't say xiaomi compare to hue (for my needs anyway) but sure bargains on good products is great. I'm just surprised how many times thw same products get listed and people get excited by 2c savings.

  • When y'all ask for codes who do you ask? Do you ask someone on chat or send a message to support?

  • Is it WiFi?

    • Sadly no. I say sadly, but honestly being able to boil from my bedroom while hoping it has water in it (which it doesn't, cos I'm dating an Asian) doesn't seem like the best feature.

  • +1

xiaomi water, xiaomi iot, xiaomi phone, xiaomi watch, xiaomi bargain, xiaomi news, , xiaomi kettle, xiaomi usb, xiaomi torch, xiaomi dashcam, xiaomi wife, xiaomi tv, xiaomi air purifier, xiaomi router, xiaomi note, xiaomi tv, xiaomi personal transport, xiaomi audio, xiaomi bluetooth, xiaomi laptop, , xiaomi luggage, xiaomi fridge, xiaomi tablet.. kill me now these guys have everything .. xiaomi knows when you take a shit, xiaomi knows where your going, xiaomi knows what your going to eat, xiaomi listening to everything you say, xiaomi WILL take over the world .. one consumer device at a time..

    • That list doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. They sell underwear and socks too.

      • lol

      • with the ration of men to women in china due to old one child policy and people wanting boys, Xiaomi will make sex dolls at some stage I'm sure … problem will be chinese instructions for Australian buyers and if it comes with US or EU power plug.

    • In the end only Apple and Xiaomi will remain. Everything will look the same because Xiaomi copes Apple.

      • they move a lot faster than apple so likely they will overtake ..

        • "Bankers expect Xiaomi's profits to rise sharply in 2018 as its rebound continues, and have told the company — valued at $46 billion in a 2014 funding round before its slump — that a $100 billion valuation at IPO is possible."

          https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/15/xiaomi-ipo-second-half-of-20…

Quick Google says Apple surpassed 900Bn late last year.

  • Just a word of caution, I bought this kettle last time it was reduced. When it arrived, it was DOA. You could bluetooth to it, but it wouldn't boil water and when you typed in the error message that appeared on the app, Xiaomi on their help page said it was unfixable.

Contacted Gearbest, they offered me a refund (not including postage, paid for AU Express) or they could send a new kettle untracked.

I tried to get them to resend it AU Express, but they wouldn't budge. In the end, opted for the refund, lost the postage money.

  • Used this kettle in a AirBnB residence. Nothing special. But kettles in Myer etc. are just as expensive, if not more.

  • They should build in a weight measuring device into the base so it can tell you how much water is in the kettle.

  • To anyone who owns this kettle, can you turn it on with the app?

From what i can see you can only control temperature via the app.
