  • Free upgrade… To economy

Forced prepaid tipping for a country that doesn't accept tips?

    • +3

      Tour guide gotta eat…

      • +1

Which is why they have a job?

        • Their job don't pay them enough hence they require tips.

    • -1

Normal practice on most if not all guided tours (for the guides not other things).

  • +4

Have to say no deal with the forced tipping. Japan is not a tipping culture and tipping is seen as disrespectful.

    • +3

I assume the tips will become sales rep commission.

    • +1

      you tip the tour guide
      nothing to do with Japan

      • +1

You don't tip your tour guide in Japan, or anyone else for that matter.

I've been to Japan 5 times, I'm smelling a lot of BS in this offering.

        • No the tour company often collects this as part of the deal.

        • Indeed, deceptive and sneaky, trying to hoodwink first time visitors to Japan.

  • +2

Also why sell a package holiday that costs thousands, and then exclude an essential train ride from the total price?

  • FREE upgrade to 5-star Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines or All Nippon Airways

    What?

    • +1

Yep….upgrade from what I want to know? Jetstar? There certainly isn't $500 difference between jetstar and the other "5 star" airlines listed…..in fact, in my experience the other airlines are often cheaper after you add luggage with jetstar.

I did same trip 7 days for total $4000 including food, bullet train, accomodation, airfare for 3 person so it came down approx $1330 per person.

    • +3

Doing it yourself is often cheaper and more fun. I prefer this as I hate having regimented wake up times, usually at some ungodly hour.

      • +1

Exactly and you will have more flexibility around how much time you want to spend on each attraction/place.

        • So how did you manage this at that price? Airfare and rail pass alone would have been close to $1k.

        • +1

And I might add, with data sims readily available these days, getting lost is a thing of the past.

        • +1

@gadget: Got discounted Jetstar ticket it was around $370 per person return (mel-narita). So around $1200 for airfare(including luggage), ~$700 for two JR pass (My 5yr old did not need JR as they can sit in lap but 99% of time, we got seat for three of us in bullet trains.Around $1000 for airbnb in Kyoto and Tokyo and rest in food, local train pass etc…Also got portable wifi from airbnb host in tokyo and kyoto so no need for sim.

        • @pyramid:

          Good job !

If you’re required to tip and pay for bullet train then the posted price is not the total. Very deceptive considering that’s another $320pp. Not chump change.

Re above comment "If you’re required to tip and pay for bullet train then the posted price is not the total. Very deceptive considering that’s another $320pp. Not chump change."

So true this is very deceptive.

Also their is no tipping in Japan, it is considered bad manners to attempt to do so, as the Japanese are very proud to always give great service without question.

  • Japan is so easy to travel without being part of a tour - I would rather be free and go where I want to go.

This is a rough breakdown if you did it yourself, excluding the tour guide:

$700-800 for Singapore Air or Qantas flights (book when cheap).
800-1200$ for accommodation. (100-150$ per night, you definitely could find cheaper and if more than 1 person this charge is lower for each.)
    325$ for Shinkansen JR pass.
Meals approximately 75$ per day to eat well, 50$ to eat medium, and 25$ to eat cheap. $825, $550, $275
~100$ for other transportation (probably too much, since you have JR pass).
~100$ for other attraction entrance (assuming no big places like USJ or Disneyland).
Total (taking mid on everything): $2825

This looks similar to their price, except theirs is "twin share" meaning 2 people have to book, or you get charged an extra 800$ for single occupancy. Also, it's another 500$ for Cherry Blossom season. Plus the tipping and the "bullet train fee", which is $320.

Even with the discount this tour is more than you could book it for yourself. You'd end up on Shinkansen (or trains) for most of your trip, instead of in busses and be able to control your schedule. I looked at their itinerary and most of it is free activities or temple entrances which are small fees. Also, they charge $120 for Disneyland, even when the ticket for Disneyland is only 7400 yen, or approximately 85$. If you did do this tour, you should just line up and buy it yourself at the gate or online.

I will note the convenience of having it all planned for you though.

    • you are awesome~!~~

    • Disneyland ticket is about 100 - 200 yen cheaper buying from the ticket shops near Shinjuku station. I’m sure there are more ticket shops selling them elsewhere.

  • excludes prepaid tipping $140pp and bullet train $180pp.

    WTF is that? …

Japan is very easy to travel by DIY~! really nice and convenient place!

This price of deal seems sucks!
