Are these Benson Approved? (or otherwise proven more than just relying on the BW name)

  • +2

Can we get a deal on longer length Type-C to Type-C cables? (1m is on the short side)

  • +2

Benson says Apple USB-c to usb-c are the best charging cable available but slower for transfers
Harvey Norman selling them on special right now
The best usb-c cable in the world (transfer speed) has to be ordered from the usa
I will not trust any cable not rated best on his list unless its to charge something cheap

    • +1

There are a few Belkin C-C cables on the Apple Store that get a highest rating on Nathan K's spreadsheet, and have better transfer speeds.

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vnpEXfo2HCGADdd9G2x9…

If you're looking for an A-C, Kogan has a Belkin Mixit cable which is USB-IF certified. Or there's a Belkin on the Apple Store on the above spreadsheet too.

      • its a nice cable but overpriced and short

        • You could also take a look at the USB-IF certification list and if anything there fits your needs better.

          http://www.usb.org/kcompliance/view/USB%20Type-C%20Cable%20C…

        • As to the overpricing, it seems at the moment you can get a "bargain" or you can get a good cable, getting a bargain on a good cable at the moment seems nigh impossible.

I suspect such is the situation with USB-C that the good stuff seems to sell out fairly quickly, so there's no need for anyone to discount them.

Of course, I'm sure there are good uncertified/unreviewed cables out there, but how can we tell?

        • @mattythecapybara:
the apple cable at harvey normal is a bargain since it is tested to be the best tested for charging
          https://www.harveynorman.com.au/apple-2m-usb-c-charge-cable-…
          cheaper with officejerks price beat

        • @thelastnoob: I actually took a look at that recently. HN's delivery prices actually meant it was more expensive than the Apple Store's free shipping for me! (slightly, YMMV) Didn't look at price beat.

    • Who is this Benson dude?

      • +1

Benson is a Google engineer that has started a crusade against accessories that are non-compliant with the USB C spec. He posts a lot of reviews on Amazon / google+ of USB C cables, adapters and chargers.

Nathan K is another guy who has joined the crusade, and does similar.

      • he is a geek who works for the evil google who blew up his phone using a cheap usb-c cable and started testing heaps of cables

Why do we have USB C to USB C cables as standard now?

I only have standard USB Female ended chargers!

    • Because USB C is far better.

      • +1

But where can they be used?

        • +3

Between USB C devices and USB C chargers.

More and more devices are adopting USB C, and using USB A to USB C cables ("legacy" cables) is not only sub-optimal (slower charging) but is also the cause of most USB C problems (non-spec complaint cables, etc).

USB C & USB C PD (Power Delivery) is the future. The sooner USB A is phased out, the better.

        • @caprimulgus:

What's a good USB C charger? Literally just have the standard USBc charger that comes with the pixel and that's all.

          All power packs too…

        • +1

          @jonnoyeo:

I'm not sure which chargers work with the Pixel, but check out Benson Leung's suggestions, as he works for google, and definitely would have recommended chargers for the pixel.

If you don't need PD, and are just using 15W (3A) USB C, there are lots around.

If you need PD, I currently have the Tronsmart 60W 5 port charger with 1x 30W PD port, but have just ordered the Xiaomi 45W PD charger to use with my ZMI 10 powerbank and Nintendo Switch (both of which use PD). Can get it for $20USD.

The Aukey 30W PD + 18W QC charger is also on sale at Amazon at the moment, for ~$24USD plus delivery.

Both of those use USA plugs, though, so you'll need an adapter. I struggled to find cheap and compact USB C PD chargers with AU plugs.

        • @caprimulgus:
the anker pd 30W+ charger is on special at amazon

        • USB C monitor to a modern phone/tablet/laptop with USB C

Can handle charging/video/audio with 1 cable

Not all cables are the same for the above feature though

        • @thelastnoob:

Anker or Aukey? I know the Aukey is on sale, but didn't know the Anker was - do you have a link?

Here's the Aukey, with 17% off coupon:

        • @thelastnoob:

Ah cool, that looks like a great charger, but still a bit pricey for my tastes! :)

Anker is known for quality though, so probably a great charger!

        • What's this one like?

          https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-S10-30W-USB-Type-C-PD-…

I ordered one. Much cheaper than the ones mentioned above and BlitzWolf seems like a decent brand.

        • @chromium:

That looks ok, but the only thing I would caution you on is that, AFAIK, QC3.0 is not compliant with the USB C spec. From what I understand, the blitzwolf charger offering QC3.0 on the USB C port breaks the spec, but I am not sure what that means in practice (how the charger will behave, and whether it causes any issues in practice).

I have no QC devices though, so I haven’t paid too much attention to USB C and QC, so have a read up on it - it may or may not be completely fine, I have no idea!

Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

I bought 2 of these from Banggood on 2 different orders and I found the quality isn't the same.
The first one works great, charging good and fast file transfer. The second one charged my phone a lot slower. Tried them with same chargers, computers.

    • Great thanks for the feedback!

  • Looking at how far regular USB and micro USB cables went over the years I'd still say to stick to the "bang for buck" cables as surely they will get better or better spec'd generally as USB C becomes more common.

I suspect for most people it'll be like me where their first requirement for USB will come from the fact their phone, tablet then laptops have one - rather than actually requiring the USB-C capability. Thus me stocking up on those micro USB => USB C adapters when they show up here!
