I think this phone is worth mentioning. It is still selling for $249 at JB HiFi.

Pro:
Big screen (5.5 inches) - probably con if you like a smaller screen device
2 GB RAM, 16 GB ROM (usually you'll get only 1GB RAM, 8 GB ROM for a local phone)
Local Warranty
Android Nougat 7.0 (again, usually you will probably only get android 6.0 for a local device in this price range)
Dual SIM (according to JB HiFi spec. I would think they both would be the same)
4000mAh battery

Con:
No NFC
EMUI (since many don't like this interface. For me, it's no problem at all. It's still an android)
Probably so-so camera (well, it's below 200 dollars, probably even better than most Xiaomi's within the price range)

Pretty decent phone, only 720p screen and no fingerprint sensor, but it has a MicroSD slot and that massive 4000 mAh battery will last for ages with the 720p screen.

Not sure if it's been 28? Also it takes 1080p video which is cool.

My dad was going to buy one of these. When he went into store, the person suggested to buy the Hauwei GR5 2017 phone instead which they had on sale for $199 ($399 online). Not sure whether this was store specific. He bought from Sunshine VIC store.

Looking at the comparison (https://www.gadgetsnow.com/compare-mobile-phones/Huawei-GR5-…), the GR5 seems a better phone. It is a dual sim phone but 2nd slot works on 2G only when the other is used so just use it for extra storage. Phone comes unlocked too.

    • $199 for the gr5 is an excellent price

  • +1

Does this have a notification led?

    • Doesn't look like it based on the pictures assuming the 2 holes are for camera and proximity sensor

      • Notification LEDs are sometimes behind/in speakers.

      Negger should be executed.

The best feature is that it is confirmed working as 4G+3G dual sim

I was going to get a Nokia 5 at $~200 which has NFC and Fingerprint Sensor but this will suit my (parents')needs just fine since it has bigger screen and bigger battery, and looks to have Band 28

Specs overview extracted from Whirlpool link above
    Model: Huawei Y7
    Status: Confirmed
Functionality: 4G/3G Hybrid, SD slot uses SIM 2 slot
    Mode: Dual stand-by
    Chipset: Snapdragon 435
    Android: 7.0 with EMUI 5.1
    4G Bands: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 19, 28
    Other Features: 5.5" 720 x 1280 display, 2GB RAM, 4000mAh battery, Compass
    Street Price: $279-$299

    • earlier post confirms it is 4G and 3G even though whirlpool comments were ambiguous.

    • 720p, 425 SN seems pretty low specs for $189. Even for local, I feel we can do much better…?

      The hauwei Y6 Elite (5", 720p, but 1GB RAM) was $89 (with $40 starter, $50 giftcard)

Or am I just spoiled by the xiaomi import bargains?

16GB ROM - is that the correct terminology? I thought ROM was read-only memory.

    • +1

Google tells me that manufacturers or retailers still do refer ROM as internal drive. Tough crowd here…

    • for the marketers is easier than using "flash memory" as the term, but yes, technically it isn't ROM.

  • usually you'll get only 1GB RAM, 8 GB ROM for a local phone)

    Since when?

    • +2

Yeah, I knew someone would notice this. What I meant was for around that price, it is not easy to find a budget phone with more than 1GB /8GB locally.

  • +1

You might as well get a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X (3GB/32GB version) for $180 AUD from AliExpress Goldway.

    Better specs all around.

    • +2

True… That's why I keep emphasizing "locally" (which means you could get it faster and better /easier to claim warranty)…

      • Yep that would be the only benefit in this case. If buying a local product is absolutely critical for you.

        • +2

It's hard to beat xiaomi budget phones (if you don't mind the wait, warranty, import product, no band 28, NFC, camera and,if you are paranoid, the spying of the Chinese government)… This is not a slam on xiaomi products, just stating the cons…

        • +1

Huawei is also a Chinese company, so they're probably both spying ;)

If you're paranoid, the only solution would be to flash a custom ROM such as Lineage OS.

This phone doesn't have NFC either.

And in terms of camera, both this and the Xiaomi use the cheaper OmniVision sensor so likely to be very similar camera quality.

Pros: Xiaomi has a much nicer 1080p screen, Snapdragon 625, larger battery, one of the best fingerprint sensors on any phone, full metal body and 10-15 hour screen-on time with the 4100mAh battery.

        • +1

Totally agree… That is the part why "it's hard to beat xiaomi budget phones "… :) Xiaomi is amazing. Too bad people still have a negative view of China brands in general (Read: my sister in law dismisses it right away, no matter how much good I told her Note 4x is)…

        • hmm I believe Lineage might also be written by one of the Red Armies Cyber divisons …. If you are interesting enough for a sovereign state to want to spy on you they will do it on a targeted basis, for other 100's of millions, our "average joe" boring conversation in Australia are of little interest to governments, only google and facebook are interested so they can sell us stuff.

At least Chinese gov doesn't sell data, they have other revenue streams and they have enough money …. for other organisations it's their only source of revenue

    • If your worried about the Chinese spying, you may as well add the Hugely popular Moto G5/plus/S ( Now Lenovo )range as well as all their other models too.

  • Don't forget to take a selfie to say hi to Mr Xi…😎

    • I did but he hasn't responded.

Had this phone for two months and absolutely love it. Responsive, good screen and camera and feels light to hold. Great phone.

    • My question wasn't really answered above, does it have a notification led?

      • I don't think so, no.

  • +2

Shopmonk is doing AUD$160 for Xiaomi Note 4X Gold today if anyone is considering importing one. Better screen and will be 3GB/16GB.

    • Does it do dual sim 4G+3G?

    • Shame to have missed out on one for $135.
Any of those lucky owners able to comment?

    • It's $152 for the black 32GB one at eGlobal.

      • And $149 for gold but it's +$25 for shipping.

Still prefer knowing that dual SIM is supported in Oz

        • +1

Ah, shipping! Still… $14 more for 16GB extra sounds like a better deal than shipmonk's.

As for dual SIM, GSM Arena and reviews say it's hybrid, i.e. slot can be used for 2nd SIM or microSD, not both.

        • +2

@wisdomtooth: that is not the question i am asking. What i want to know is if it supports 4G+3G at the same time. Some phones SIM2 only support 2G if SIM1 is using LTE

        • +2

@wisdomtooth: shopmonk ships from singapore(free shipping) and normally takes only like a week to get here, plus a one year warranty from their base in melbourne. The others like gearbest/eglobal etc will take around 4-5weeks to get here from hongkong/china and if you need to do any warranty, good luck with that.

To note: Shopmonk was slowly increasing the prices of these as the AUD went down. However now that the AUD is going back up, i think $160 and less will be the price. But the other models are at $200+ now likely due to the coming Ebay 20% off sale which shopmonk also list with.

I was going to wait till next month as thats when Xiaomi releases some of their new models but my sisters bday is coming up real soon.

        • +1

@StevieRay: yes note 4x supports 4g/3g but i dont find that a big deal. Normally all my data allowance will be with one provider, the other provider would just be backup. Plus you would want a dedicated phone on permanent charging if you wanted to do the 4g+hotspot combo for home wifi. I find just leaving the phone on 4g and hotspot sucks the battery flat pretty fast.

        • @KangaBanga:
My father has been diagnosed with a form of Multifocal motor neuropathy
He now travels overseas more often to visit family.
Having a single device to (wirelessly) charge and is pre-installed with SIMs to support local and overseas respectively appeals to me / him.

Could you please confirm / rephrase as I know that the 4X supports 4G and 3G.
I want to know if both SIM slots support 4G (SIM1) + 3G (SIM2) simultaneously.

Sorry to belabour the point, but don't want to purchase something that is not fit for purpose.
Oh and a huge thanks in advance

        • +1

@StevieRay: Yes supports 4g/3g dual standby.( The previous version Note 4 did not for the Chinese version but for global version they upgraded the ROM for 4g/3g support. ) Though if you can afford it the $300 newer Xiaomi A1 would be a better buy as it will have perpetual stock android support.

        • @KangaBanga:

I think StevieRay is asking if the Huawei Y7 is 4G/3G for both sims. You mention the Xiaomi Redmi Note4/4x mainly, maybe make it super clear.

I believe this has expired? I clicked through to the deal, and BigW are listing the phone at $299, not $199 :(
