PC video to TV

What is a cheap way to wirelessly display video from my laptop, to a TV that on the other side of the room? It's only a CRT TV, so I don't care about video quality.

The computer is a Dell laptop with a PRO3X docking station (same as this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322986140536). Which has:

USB 2.0 ports
Display/video - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)
Display/video - 24 pin digital DVI
Display/video - 20 pin DisplayPort / VGA / Audio Ports
RJ-45 network socket

The TV is an analog CRT with the standard white/red/yellow RCA-type audio/video inputs. It also has an 'S-Video' socket.

  • I suggest a SteamBox (ebgames sells them often at $25-30). But is HDMI out.

Rather than wasting money on a HDMI to RCA adapter get a $150 TV

Analog CRT, I have not heard someone say that for a long time.

You'd just need a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter or a Chromecast in order to cast stuff remotely to any TV.

the only problem being your TV doesn't have HDMI, so you'd need to grab also an HDMI to RCA converter box from ebay for about $12 ~ $20, which is a very janky and untidy setup.

      Chromecast has very limited functionality.

      • Yeah I think the Chromecast can't play video files - only online services like Netflix?

    • Actually I forgot about the HD set top box. It has a USB port on the front and I think it has HDMI on the back. So that MS device jumpers across those ports, the USB being for power I guess?

I thought I'd need two devices: one in a USB port on the laptop to transmit, and the other plugged into the TV to receive. So you're saying the laptop can already transmit video over bluetooth or wifi?

  • how much are you looking to spend?

    you could use this:

my parents have one, and it works pretty well for what it is.

you just need a converter to convert the vga on your laptop to s-video. there should be plenty of such adapters on ebay for cheap.

    • That might do if I can't find something smaller, thanks.

  • Place laptop ontop of CRT tv?

      • Still have no TV-out socket on laptop and no wifi in on TV.
      • Laptop is connected to about 427 different devices and cables. i.e. It's a pain in the neck to move it. It would be easier to move a lounge chair to the laptop. (Which I want to stop doing, LOL.)
      • Wow I can see you're a bit tied down there! :O

Maybe putting the huge crt on gumtree and using the payment to go towards a cheap/second hand smart tv would be better? Also free you up some leg room :)

I stream my videos straight to my smart tv through my wifi network which works well, or just dump videos on a usb and plug it in. As well as hdmi for extra options.

Hope you find a solution soon :)
