as opposed to the round button version?
Yep. This can only do single and double click. Round version can do hold.
In Home Assistant, the round one has the following click types - single, double, long press click, long press release and hold. I don't know the difference between the hold and long press events.
hmm it's interesting though, I wonder if this is just a software limitation?
Wait, what? I'd never heard of the long press release or hold options, and I've implemented a number of these buttons with multi click setups.
I'd be keen to know what the proper titles are for those last two modes.
This link has all the components listed. Scroll down for examples

@randombrick: Thanks for that! I've looked at that page a bunch of time and completely overlooked those.
The official app (mi home) supports long press only for the round (Xiaomi branded) button.
I don't think it's a software limitation.
Home Assistant only has access to single and double click also for this model.
In case anyone is interested, this is what the 3 events look like in Home Assistant:

Which version does and why do we want it?
I am only looking at this from the perspective of using in Home Assistant. So I could use long press or hold to increase brightness of a lamp for e.g.
Not sure if the MiHome app can do this when paired to Yeelight.
You can certainly configure the V1 switches to do this. However, I've found it easier for others in the household if i program a simple toggle between dim and bright using double click, which both versions can do.
Yep, I am probably going to do that. I personally prefer the square aesthetic of this switch.
I do have one use case where I need three things - on/off, dim/bright and a night mode. Will revisit that later.
@randombrick: I remember seeing in the home assistant forums a person who got triple click working, so that might be worth considering.
I also prefer the square aesthetics of the V2/aqara switch.
Another option is the Xiaomi "magic cube", which has about 6 different switch combinations. I have mine set to turn my bedside lamp on/off on flip 90degrees, bright/dim on rotate and shake to toggle the light in the baby's room. Flip 180, double tap etc haven't yet been given a task.
dare i ask, what is the switch and what does it do?
You can program the switch to turn on specific/a combination of smart things or scenes. Requires a gateway to work, useless on its own.
Can you not already do that with Stringify or IFTTT?
By pressing what? You can't press IFTTT. You can't press Stringify. You can press a switch… thats what this is. (Doesn't trigger anything by itself, needs to be paired with a gateway and maybe a server of sorts that will detect the press and take an action).
Sure you can, but how do you trigger things on those? Sometimes I don't want to talk to my GHM, a button is always better.
what does it do?
the xiaomi round button can do single, double & hold press actions
so this does single and double still?
yeah
Thanks, I am really not understanding all these revisions… and if this is newer why have less functions?
Because less is more
After seeing Xiaomi Door/Window sensor this switch looks big and ugly. :)
Does this work with a yeelight?
Yes it does, and makes an excellent door bell too
Bugger it expired when I got to Paypal… price reverted to normal and now says expired.
Thanks anyway OP!
Yep, definitely expired now :( Can always use more of these switches…
do you need a zigbee/bluetooth hub to use this? As this is wireless im under the impression that it can all just hook back to your router. Is this right?
No, it definitely needs the Xiaomi hub. It uses ZigBee (Xiaomi's version) not WiFi.
Thanks, so if I want to purchase Xiaomi smart home products and not buy a hub, I need to explicitly ensure they are the wifi versions. Is that right?
You may as well buy the hub, it's on sale here cheap enough quite often
@xev: I just was trying to avoid another device to clutter the place up. Is there any downside to buying the wifi only versions of them?
This seems bigger than the newer switch? I got the newer one for my door (bell) and it's brilliant.
What can it do as a doorbell?
Which one was that? AFAIK, this is the newest version but lacks features (go figure)
Coming up expired for me. "The Code you entered has expired." I am logged in.
Beware that the Aqara version listed here apparently does not support long press.
