Amazon Web Services - Free USD$150 Credit via CS50 (edX maybe required)

101

Similar spirit to this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/292266

Unsure if they'll cross check edX accounts (last time they didn't) - if you don't feel like registering for free and want to roll the dice, here's the direct link to the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfBG1ss2Hu06wF4Itvo…

Update:

Hi all,
You're receiving this note because you expressed an interest in some AWS credits for CS50. It seems the credits currently require a .edu email address, which many CS50x students don't have, so we've reached out to our friends at Amazon to see if we can fix that. Stay tuned for an email from the CS50 Bot in a week or two, we hope! Apologies for the trouble!

Just got an email from the instructor saying there was a mixup and Amazon expected .edu emails. There will be an update in a week or 2 :/

        • @blighst:

          • just checked and i got the same email.. from Harvard..
  • Would have loved 2GB dropbox space over this, sigh.

Wouldn't recommend. You basically need a lawyer to read the contract and actually understand what the credit will and won't cover. More than likely through general use you'll end up with a bill still.

Amazon are appalling at sorting out billing issues and/or processing refunds.

Note I received the AWS Educate credits when I had this issue - believe they're equal.

    • I'm not so sure they're 100% equivalent. These credits are supposed to be used for students on their final projects - I personally don't use AWS that much so can't comment on how hard it is to use, but haven't heard any complaints about being billed for other charges with these (whereas I know others are rather ambigous at times)

    • Not the case (any more). AWS support have always been excellent for me (and others I know) for billing issues, and they recently updated the free tier and billing console so you are warned if your usage will go outside the free tier. As always, set up billing alerts so you know if you are going to exceed your free credits.

This was only around 3 months ago.

I didn't exceed usage, they claimed the credit differs from my usage (which was excess bandwidth usage).

The credits are clear on whar services they apply to.. and usually include bandwidth. Worth a haggle.

        • @whiffyfuzzball:

I didn't pay the bill, though they sent many demanding emails and argued it a lot. Ended up settling on waiving bill and closing account.
