PS4 or Xbox for family new to gaming

Hi All

Without wanting to start a war between the two sides, just looking for recommendations on what system would be better for a family with 2 kids (8 and 10) looking for their first system.

Also interested to know if a 500 GB system is too small?

Thanks

How about a switch? They have more family friendly games.

    • Gotta make sure they don't drop it when in handheld mode.

  • Yes, in my experience and I don't have many games. 500Gb is too small.

Do your kids' friends play console games? I would get the one the majority of their friends have.

    500gb is insufficient these days.

    • per friends - yes
500 too small - yes and no, as others have stated external drives are an option

I was the one who stated external drive is an option.

Ps4 it has games for everyone and incredible exclusives like Uncharted and Horizon zero dawn.

500gb is fine to start off with, if you find it too little you always have the option of upgrading the internal hard drive. You DONT need to pull the console apart to do this (there's a panel on the back you slide off and then one screw you can then slide the HDD out). The is no way to upgrade the internal HDD on xbox one.

Both consoles can also use external USB drives to expand storage but I find it unsightly. However it is an option. Ensure drive is a USB 3.0 drive.

Or you can add an external HDD through usb? Not that hard..

    What's kids age?

Xbox is cheapest at about $270

PS4 is best for the variety of games, most exclusives this generation by far.

Nintendo Switch for more kid-friendly games.

500GB is plenty especially if you're a casual user. The games 'install' to the hard drive, taking up 40-80GB for a large game. You can always uninstall them no problems. Further, you can plug in a cheap USB HDD and away you go.

  • If you don't bother much about graphics and prefer the convenience of potentially needing to play while on the go or while traveling, Switch would be it.

  • I'd go switch to be honest for kids, but if you want to play more adult games then maybe not (though switch is getting Dark Souls and PayDay 2 I think?). Honestly I really want to support the Xbox, they have pretty great customer service (from what I've used) and great backwards compatibility which is fun. But truth is I find the PS4 better, mostly because the PS4 has the exact same games you can get on xbox one plus more, theres only a couple games on the xbox one thats exclusive, and while they're awesome I still find it hard to justify my xbox purchase (I have all 3 consoles).

Other then that they're very much the same, you insert a disk, you use a controller, both controllers feel great to me, they're about the same size, no noticeable game difference etc etc. Nothing to argue about as they're both great consoles.

Most importantly though you'll want to know what your mates (or kids mates) are using, if they're the same they might play together online, or share games or even feel better if most kids (or adults honestly) fanboy one way or another.

If you expect to have quite a few games and get games fairly regularly 500gb isn't enough, but if you expect to get a few games a year, delete games off after you finish it, it should be plenty.

  • I think that the suggestions for the Switch are on-point. I’d be looking at that.

  • Ps4
    User interface and exclusives

  • PS4 and Xbox are mainly adult and teenage boy games. For kids and playing as a family get a Switch. Adults in the family can play their adult games on their PCs.

  • do you know if theyll like playing games?

id get a ps3. amazing games, really cheap wont hurt the wallet. it will be "new" to them and then in a year or two upgrade if need be.

  • Thanks for all of the feedback- much appreciated.

They are just about to start at a new school so I was actually thinking of them asking friends what they have for the social and game swapping/ trading aspect.

From the above I am leaning towards the PS4 as it seems to have a lot of plusses and might let Dad have some man cave time as well.

Any tips on best place to get one?

  • I hope you have an NBN connection if you want to use a PS4 or XBox One. I installed a game (Halo 4 I think) from disc. After installation I needed to download 50GB in order to play it. FFS!
