What Is The Right Payment Method to Buy from Chinese Website?

By Right Payment Method, I mean what is the best cheapest option method.

I understand it is cheaper that you pay in USD throughout the transaction process, when it hits PayPal, always choose 'Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice'.

But this bit is the one am still confused … do we pay with 28 Degree for better conversion rate or CBA/ANZ/Westpac/NAB Mastercard is fine?

Thanks!

  • 28 degrees/no international fee card.

    • Looking at my commbank transaction, i don't see any international fee card either. Hence the question.

EDIT: apology, i saw it now … ok i now understand to use my 28 degree card going forward.

      • As far as free alternative options go, there is also the Bankwest Platinum CC or the Citibank Plus Debit Card.

There are also a few other ones, but these will either attract conditions (ING) or fees (Coles MC).

    • are there any annual fees for 28 Degree?

  • What annoys me with the 28 Degrees card is that they actually charge me a fee for PAYING my bill! I pay each month via BPay and every time they slug me with a $0.95 "Payment Handling Fee (Online)". WHAT BLOODY HANDLING?!?! IT'S ONLINE!!

    • BPAY isn’t free for the biller.

    • You get charged for paying bill?

Why? I used 28 degree in the past and don't recall such thing.

Has there been recent change that put this fee in practice?

      • From 11 July 2016, so not that recent.

There is a way to avoid that Bpay fee though bank debit.

Yeah - its a bit of a pain but I now pay by direct debit through the 28 Degrees page.
I find it odd that 28 Degrees wants to make it difficult to get paid - but I guess every card has its drawbacks.

I hazard a guess it may have something to do with the way people were using it (ie. essentially like a debit card), so by doing it this way, people are only able to pay the balance, and no more. Plus it means if you have transactions around statement date and you use the insurance, it's harder to have a nil balance come statement date.

  • I don't understand how 28 degrees can help, their isn't any fees with a Prepaid VISA or PayPal balance. Sometimes selecting AUD is cheaper depending on the sites currency conversion.

    • yes. you're being overcharged.

      • If the deal is 1 cent, 1 cent is billed from my card. Can a 28 degrees card make it cheaper?

        • Common deal that I do so far range between $2 to $20 USD and the Max I see International transaction fee was 70 cents on my mastercard.

70 cents once off is okay but we know we shop all the time for Xiaomi this and Xiaomi that, so it does accumulate.

I be interested to know if 28 degree is a true free credit card (of course provided that we pay bills on time) and not getting charged for method of paying bill as the other bloke mentioned above. If this can't be avoided, might as well cope the international transaction fee in Mastercard.

          at that scale no.
but at a larger scale yes.
then you can have as many 1 cent deals as you have saved in conversion fees

        • @tempura:

There are alternative payment methods for 28 Degrees that are free, as long as you don't mind providing them with your bank account details for them to debit the amount.

        • @tomsco: I see .. understood .. thank you!

PayPal's conversion rates aren't as good as MC/Visa's (see here), so you're slightly worse off using PayPal balance. Haven't used prepaid Visa so not sure how that works.

      • Thank you, i don't know much about this topic. The link looks helpful.

You can directly convert with Mastercard here. Visa doesn't let you calculate a custom rate, and I find xe.com to be equal to both normally.

Massive difference when you compare to PayPal's calculations.

        • @Clear:

Yep, MC and VISA would be using wholesale rates, similar to XE, whereas PayPal would be a more retail rate, similar to going to a bank to exchange cash (although possibly not as bad).

^That might not be the correct terminology, but just trying to explain my understanding (make it Clear if you will).

PS. Not aimed at you specifically, Clear, more general info if anyone is researching.

FInd a card that has no currency conversion fees, add to Paypal then set the card to use it's own currency conversion from this guide. Then you'll get the VISA/Mastercard rate which is normally better than what the sites offer.

I personally have a bank account in USD so I never have to worry about currency conversion :)

    • FInd a card that has no currency conversion fees

      28 Degree ?

      • Yep I have 28 Degrees setup for that too.
