Travel Agent Commission - How Much Do They Receive?

Are there any travel agents out there? I want to make a booking for a tour in Alaska that people generally book direct with the provider. They have told me that they will accept a booking made via a travel agent but they wont give them any commission. I really want to book with the travel agent (as I use discounted flight centre cards) Does anyone know what % a travel agent would normally earn on a land-based tour?

This might enable me to negotiate to pay for the commission for the travel agent and in exchange, I would get a 15% discount using the flight centre cards.

Can't speak as to anyone else but Flight Centre will just take you for as much as they can.

There's been various documentary's showing their shitty structure which encourages agents to lie, band together against customers to deceive them etc.

  • I know when I have tried to book land tours in other countries with travel agents in Australia they charge their own price in AUD. The price they charged was a fair bit more than what I could get booking direct.

  • On travel insurance they usually make like 3x the price you pay in commission, hence why they push it.

    I think you're simplifying a commission structure.
No one would know the full commission a flight agent would make.
It would be based on the business, on the position and on the incentive scheme of that employee.

  • I've seen some of the statements from travel agents (on the smaller side) and here's a real example:

    1246.00 fare
    361.12 tax
    1607.12 total
    less : 105.83 commission
    1501.29 amount due

It's 6.585% in this case, do note that it varies somewhat as well depending on the type of ticket? or is it destination?

I'm seeing on different statement (from a different travel group/supplier) which outright states commission amounts of 2%, 4%, 6%, 7.5%, 12%, some flat fee $20 with no commission which I'm assuming might be for a different service)

It's also huge pain in the ass to sort through as you need proper records per sale - in a lot of cases they apparently charge a lower commission amount.

  • thanks for all the comments so far. Gives me some idea.

  • From what Ive heard the big comms are from accom.
