Spend time in Sydney, from 7am until about 3pm on a Saturday.

Happy new year everyone.

I no longer have a base in Sydney and am flying out there for a cruise. I arrive in around 6am on a Saturday and have to be checked in by about 4pm at circular quay.

I'm planning on going to smarte carte at Sydney airport and having them transfer and store my bags at their place right across the road from the cruise ship at circular quay. It's expensive, but frees me up. I value that freedom.

I'd like to come up with something fun to do during the day. I dont do beaches/sunbathing. I've been to the blue mountains and hunter valley and don't want to go there. I'll be by myself and want to take public transport for at least the majority of the time.

I'm semi familiar with the city, but haven't been to Bondi junction. I'm considering that because I think I can take a bus from the airport directly there and avoid the gate fee at the train. I'd like to do something I'll remember or enjoy. Otherwise, I'll likely just go outlet shopping and see a movie.

This will be on the 20th of January.

Does anyone have any ideas on something I can do that will be open by say 8 or 9 and can be reached by (mostly) public transport. I'm open to tours as well.

Thanks everyone.

Catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly (look backwards for a great view of the harbour) and take a stroll around the beach, get on the ferry for the other beaches if you're interested and return to Circular Quay for your cruise.

  • Hey mate yea you can catch the 400 to Bondi Junction from the Airport. I don't think there is a direct train to Bondi any way so the bus is easier. Bondi is fairly average not much to do except maybe shopping?. How about catching the ferry to Manly its a nice trip and lots to do in Manly? It leaves from right next to your departure terminal?

  • The shops won’t be open until 9:30 or 10 on a Sunday …

Head to Surry Hills on the train (Central), have breakfast somewhere amazing while reading the paper, head to Pitt St Mall for some shopping (or you could head to Birkenhead Pt on the bus from Town Hall if you want outlet shopping), late lunch at somewhere with a glass of wine, then wander down to the dock and off you go.

Markets at Carriageworks are nice on a Saturday morning for a coffee, wander and maybe something to eat. Walking distance from Redfern station. Might kill an hour.

    • Walking Redfern kill

Sounds about right. Except maybe on a Saturday morning you might be lucky :)

  • Sydney Festival is still on then, lots of events on, performances, installations etc. See if anything interests you:

  • No point going to bondi Junction if you're not interested in going to the beach. All it has is another Westfield

I'd go to the beach and do a small part of the coastal walk and see some of the art on the wall near the beach. If it's a sunny day it'll be gorgeous

Otherwise could check out Hyde Park/St Marys Cathedral. They often have artwork out and since it's Sydney festival I'm sure there's things to check out.

Could then walk thru botanical gardens/macquaries chair which is beautiful

Could catch the train/ferry to Luna Park and see the city from the other side

Could go up the top of centre point tower/Westfield Tower for a skyview of the city. There's also lots of shopping there

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks for your ideas, I think I'm going to do with FakeJames idea on this occasion as I've spent quite a bit of time in Sydney and have done the ferries and Luna park and Hyde park.

I've never been to Bondi junction and still want to go at some stage as I'd just like to see for myself.

Now I'll check out the bus situation to get to Surrey hills. I've never done a bus to or from Sydney airport and would like to see for myself how easy it is to avoid the gate fee.

    Thanks again everyone!

  • Would suggest Maroubra beach as good as Bondi and big, get some fantastic pies from shop across road from pub and sink into a schooner or more or wine while watching the birds of all kinds. Or go to Seals club for a nice lunch and more cold ones overlooking the beach.
