Google Home Mini and Wi-Fi Lighting Question

Hi

looking at getting some lighting for the google home mini
but a little bit confused on what to get. Are there any lights that work directly with google home mini and wifi
and do not need a bridge? i nearly bought some Philips hue until i saw bridge required.

any help/brands that can do this would be greatly appreciated.

    LIFX should - https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000343583-Will…

As long as you have Wifi they will work, no bridge needed.

Yeelight bulbs will also work with Google Home without a bridge.

That is not how electricity works…

  • Sonoff is a smart device that sits behind your switches. You need an electrician to install (or a sparky mate). They work directly with google home. I can say "OK Google lounge lights on" and it will turn on and off as needed. "hey google lights off" turns off all lights, which is great from bed. You can use existing lights/switches and at $5 per switch they are quiet cheap to wire the whole house also.

    • have you actually had this feature working cos mine wont work? apparently its a bug in google assistant.

      • Yes I use it daily. set it up in We link app then link that to your google home app. Works fine.

    • Have you got the link for these. Also are they safe (fire hazard?)

      • Finding that electrician with Sonof certification is an issue.

        • There is no certification. Its a simple light switch any sparky could install.
I watched my mate and he simply cut two 15cm lengths and wired them into the existing switch. Took him 5 min to do each one.
Just make sure you sync them to the network before you restore the switches so you dont have to pull them out again like we did.

        • @idontalwaysnotlie: Serious question, would you reckon your mate can wire my house with Sonoff? I noticed you're in Sydney and assumed your mate is also in Sydney.

        • @tempura:
He is overseas at the moment but I can ask him when he gets back.

        • @idontalwaysnotlie: is he at least a licensed sparkie, do you know?

        • @tempura: Ya, works for mervac or something.

        • @idontalwaysnotlie: thanks man; this is genuine request if he can do it. When he's back, keep me posted please. thanks mate

  • Yeelight ($14 on sale) and LIFX ($40) both do the job in my house.

If I had to go again, I'd go with Yeelight. Cheaper, goes up to 1700K and works just as good as LIFX.

    • Where do you buy your Yeelights from?

It was on sale late November on Gearbest for $13. Next sale shouldn't be too far off, keep an eye out for it.

        • Cheers!

        • @Thaii:
Prepare your converter if you're bayonet

        • @tempura: Yeah I've noticed that. It's rather annoying but oh wells. Did you end up fitting new sockets in or did you just adapt them? Also thanks heads up :)

        • @Thaii: Adapt them; getting licensed sparky for me is more expensive than adapter.

is ur yeelight 220v? 220v will short circuit and cause fire

      • +1

What? Isn't our voltage is 220 240? Even Phil Hue is 220-240V.

        I think you mean 120V.

      • Huh what. Aus is 220-240V standard. Yeelight meets that standard.

      • You keep saying short circuit… I'm not sure you know what that means.

  • lifx definitely works. got 2 color bulbs and had zero issues getting them linked.

  • I like the idea of a bridge, my wifi access point is crappy and having 10 extra devices connected will not be very good. When my wifi does go down, I don’t have to worry about if each individual bulb reconnected successfully.

That said lifx is very good.

    • Very good in pricing too ……………………….

  • Another throw in for yeelight, brought one when it was cheap last year, works a treat, no slower then any other light i've seen in action, works with google home

note: (im not sure if it was like this last year but) their latest app update does require you to log in with a mi (xiomi) account to use it which will turn some people off what with the sending data to china and all that

  • What's your take on smart lights with hub and without hub?

Does the 'without-hub' literally slow down your network significantly? Say if you use 20 Yeelights or 20 LIFX, as opposed to 20 Hue via 1 Hue hub.

  • Thanks for the input everyone has anyone used the tp-link with no hub required?
