Senior Travel Insurance for USA - Use Credit Card or Buy a Policy

My 78 year old dad wants to visit family in USA - is he eligible for credit card travel insurance (say CBA, which doenst require purchase of tickets withthe card anymore, just activation prior to leaving) or do we have to buy him a travel insurance policy? I heard buying the policy can cost anywhere of $500+

Read the CBA credit card T & C's would be a good start

The WBC Black covers under 80yrs. Annual fee of $395 (might still have reduced fee 1st year still so even better) is less than $500+ :P

It also covers family/spouses, have a read over the insurance T&C.

Travel insurance for family of 4 to US for a week is about $180-$200AUD. Just did quotes the other day. TID 1Cover etc

    Comprehensive too.

    Not sure about elderly though

I wouldn't dare try with the credit-card version, there's too many exclusions hidden in the terms and conditions.

Purchase an explicit policy with TID who are great when it comes to claims for medical issues in the USA. They took complete care of the $47000 emergency appendectomy that my friend needed in Las Vegas 5 years ago for the total of a $100 excess.

    • Just read the PDS. I had no issues with ANZ black card insurance. Claimed 3 times.

Yeah the insurance you get with Westpac Black CC is one of the best around. Give it a look before you neg it.

Check the T&C, particularly in relation to pre existing conditions. If your father takes medication, or has been diagnosed with an issue, then he may need to talk to his doctor before being able to sort out insurance.

  • Thanks guys, all worthy tips. I’ll look into the westpac black
