Racing Seat Set Ups for Racing and E Sports Tournaments

Tired of being just outside of the higher tiers in racing games that are ranked and actual sims, non sim racers are easy to top the leaderboards, I've spoken to a few people who race regularly and it seems the gap between a controller vs a set up with a decent racing wheel and manual shifter is whats helping them gain the extra tenths and the increased accuracy of the pedals allows a smother ride allowing you to take all restrictions off and more consistent faster lap times.

I tried one fancy one at a race day and beat my lap record on the second attempt. that was running GT sport.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the choices available, Unfortunately to get my racing fix i use all PS and XBox and i've got a PC i can now use

the typical choices seem to be one or the other Xbox/PC or PS/PC is there a one that is cross platform outright or do you have to choose your weapon and use something like cronusmax to more to the other console.

Any feedback on the better set ups people have experienced would be appreciated

  • These sorts of set ups are available and allow for different gear to be mounted onto the frame.

Is this the kind of thing you're after?

    • yeah thats the end point.

It's probably more the hardware side i've got a sparco seat from an older track car, so i can build that part of it in one of the workshops we have on a day off

It's probably more the hardware that i'm looking for opinions on wheels pedal sets and shifters

They appear to start at just over 350 and go up from there.

  • perhaps start with a set of logitech wheel - pedal - shifter set to clip on the table and go from there? these steps can get expensive really fast. I have been using the old G25 for years now and still working great (PC only). the new G27 you'll have to choose which console you want it to be compatible with

  • Thats what i was thinking going with the Logitech to see how much time i spend in the real tournaments vs just a button bashing race with a more level playing field

I was perhaps thinking going with the PS Version since i can mirror my Xbox on my PC or use the stand alone versions of some of them. I was getting the feeling Logitech may be about to refresh their range which means they could continue to reduce if i can find out when the new one is due.

CES might give me some insight.

  • If it's your first wheel I'd point you in the direction of something like a Logitech G920, I think you'll find that PC will also offer you the most flexibility in terms of realism, because you've got things like iRacing which aren't available for consoles.

You don't need to spend big bucks on a seat and full cockpit or anything like that, I have my G25 attached to one of these, it struggles a bit with stability when drifting though.

Maybe take a look at load cells as well, they're a mod for your brake pedal that gives it a stiffer more realistic feel, I saw a big improvement in my lap times after I installed mine.

    • yeah load cells or some of the better pedal sets have compensated for this, the pedals are a large part of my reason to change you just can't get the right amount of control with the analog L2/R2 triggers. So a wheel set is the only way i'm going to get the control i need.

Then when your looking at changing fuel mix brake bias etc while still watching your revs it becomes a bit of a juggle.

Changing car to a full racing setting away from standard set up helped and i picked up a massive chunk of time with that. so i can leave brakes alone i'm light enough on tyres to get me by just jugging gears and fuel mix now which is better, until someone talks to you and you have changed the fuel mix instead of shifting down and ploughing into a wall

  • i have a g27 but unfortunately that doesn't work with ps4 anymore… and i've been umming and ahhing on what to do…
one option was to upgrade to the thrustmaster t500rs but that's definitely not very ozb like haha - though the pedals here are on a totally different level

so for the time being i've ordered a cronus drivehub to use

    • Can you let me know how that goes please i was thinking of buying one so i didn't have to use my pc for Xbox games, but the PS wheel seems to be the one to get, since i can use my pc as a second Xbox if need be but if the cronus works well for you then all the better i can keep my pc for pc stuff and not load it up with games.

Are the wheels and pedal sets a personal preference thing or are they equally as good.

It seems that Logitech and Thrustmaster are the 2 readily available ones and Fanatec seems to be higher priced alternative but has good reviews but is also cross platform.

Could justify the extra $ if there isn't a need to buy the cronus on top

  • Don't buy the Logitech G29, it's very poor when compared to the higher end Thrustmaster wheels. You'll want either a T300 RS GT Edition or the big bucks on the Thrustmaster GT wheel which is around $1k. I've owned 3 G29's and kept having different issues with them, that's not the problem though, the real problem is that it's a re-shelled G27 so you're using a 10yo wheel. They use the old plastic gears inside the wheels and as a result the FFB is extremely clunky and unrealistic in comparison to a good TM wheel.

Also go to ROOZ for more advice from Aussie enthusiasts, it's a very friendly place and you'll be on track with good people who will help you get faster.

I'll definitely have a good look around seems like just the place for me.
