Is it much more expensive to get a stopover en route to Europe? Or do you have to book separate flights with a LCC to get a good price? Previously did separate flights when Air Asia flew into Stansted and Orly. Was looking at the Etihad Qatar sales but not sure how much extra to stop over.
Stopovers on European flights

did exactly the same. the flight from adelaide was 1600. When booking from gold coast which stops in adelaide it dropped to 1200
Haha that is some banana logic right there. How do you spot these deals? I am looking to head to the USA later this year.
It's called 'hidden city ticketing' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_booking_ploys
yep, I couldn't believe there was a wikipedia page for it either!
use skiplagged website. Hidden City is more when you want to go from say
LAX-DFW which can cost say $400 with AA as only airline with hub in DFW, but instead you book to Miami or somewhere and it routes through DFW for $200 because they are then competing with every airline as they can all fly to miami through a hub. You just get off there and skip last flight, only works with no checkin luggage, and renders any subsequent flights cancelled.
i did it a load from Samoa to Brisbane, I just booked to NZ via Brisbane, and bailed every time.
@unclesnake: How do you go about collecting your bags in between? Or does this only work when you change airlines or such?
@carwashhair: i actually fly from gold coast, so i always intended to use that leg. Makes no sense in Australia to become cheaper. No competition like the USA
@knobbs: you can only take carry on, or if a day layover request u get ur bags. I also did it from Cuba to Panama, I found a bullsh*t stop in costa rica and it halved the ticket. its mental
@unclesnake: Ahh ok, but how are you travelling international with no checked in baggage haha? Light travelers?
@knobbs: if you are going in and out, can get a locker at an aiport, and stash some stuff. If in a pair, one can have the bag and pay full price, the other can have carry on and skiplag it.
all a risk
I have found flights to go up rather alot when requesting a stop over. The flight prices should go up a little because with a stop over the airline has to pay the airport tax. If you are transitting the airport gets no tax.
FYI scoot now flys to berlin
Thanks, yes saw the Berlin sale. Am thinking of booking separate flights. Perth Abu Dhabi London, then maybe return from either France or Ireland via Singapore or Bangkok. A lot of messing around but if it works out you break up the journey and it can be cheaper.
Usually you can stop over in both directions at the airlines main hub to promote the home town.
ie Singapore Airlines let you "shopover" for a few days enroute.
Emirates 72 hr/3 day stopover in Dubai.
Cathay in Hong KongOnce took a trip:
Syd to LA via Brisbane with Virgin. We had a 3 month "layover" in Brisbane (our home town) before continuing with the real part of the trip.
So we had to get a cheap flight Bris to Syd to catch the "start" of our trip to LA.
Point being, the start of the trip was low season which affects the overall cost to LA. The SYD-LAX leg was peak season at low season cost.Try searching on multi city bookings. I just booked Perth>Paris>Abu Dhabi>Sydney with Etihad for less than $100 more than Syd>Abu Dhabi return. Staying 3 days in Paris, 4 days in UAE. I generally prefer Hong Kong or LA/SF as stopovers, always stay a few days. Last time I called Cathay and they matched their fare price to Europe with a 3 day stop in HK. Shop around and phone the airlines direct if you can't find what you want. Plenty of sale fares to Europe around right now.
Is there any particular destination you want to stop over at?
My upcoming trip to Europe was through the Qatar sale that I booked in Q3 last year. We're flying in and out of Dublin and organised $100 return flights to the UK with a domestic operator. That breaks our trip to to Sydney > Doha > Dublin > London.
