Have You Noticed More Food Products Are Made in China Now?

Pringles are now made in Malaysia and the quality of some of our everyday staples are shrinking and the quality isn't as good as it used to be.

I was at Coles and saw Ritz crackers which I hadn't seen in ages, turned the box to the side to check the ingredients and saw that they were made in China!

First it was the m&m bars now the ritz crackers!

I personally don't trust food that's made in a place with all the conspiracies of fake foods going on and try to avoid it as much as possible. I thought that Ritz were always made in Australia so it came as a bit of a shock and I now make a point to check where all the fod I buy is made in now.

Has anyone else found that more food items are now being produced in China? I'm sure there are other items as well out there that I can't recall off the top of my head, so if you know one, please share!

there's plenty of food products that are made overseas, not just China. If you dont like overseas made, just start with the most expensive version of that item as that's a good indicator of being Aussie made.

I don't mind them being made overseas so much, it's just that Ritz used to be made in Australia, and I thought that Mars made their products in Australia and to my surprise both were made in China. I don't trust the food made from there and so try to avoid it as much as possible

      • large organisations go to places like China for the cheaper labour and operational costs. The actual ingredients that go into that Ritz biscuit would probably come from the same supplier no matter which country it's made in.

yep, I've been avoiding NZ made for a while now.

It's a shame because if I was going to support another country, I would prefer it to be kiwis.

      • Whenever I see a label saying 'Made in New Zealand', I automatically assume its made in China.

NZ has destroyed its good food reputation.

All Nabisco (oreos, etc) in Australia are made in China.

I'd expect well known companies to regulate their outputs in accordance with their standards regardless where they're made. Smaller producers might be more hit and miss. Personally I don't normally mind where the products are made - I often buy unknown brands from Asian grocers - but I'm always buying plant based foods; I'd shudder to think about the origins of any animal inputs.

"well known companies to regulate their outputs "
"I'm always buying plant based foods"

      like poo berries?

    • +1

I'm sure the companies would try and regulate it but with the difference in hygiene standards and the like I feel like the risk wouldn't be worth it

if you are that worried about hygiene don't ever eat out again.

        • I'm not a germaphobe, but reading about some of the things going on in China, I rather be safe than sorry.

        • @pyro love bird: just think eating a few ritz biscuits made in china are the least of your health concerns.

    Coles

aldi sells made in australia. give them a try.

    • I didn't know that, thanks, will give them a go :)

  • Shouldn’t be an safety issue as those that are produced overseas with brands are usually with factories owned by the corporation and usually run by the corporation therefore there shouldn’t be a major concern. However degrading quality is usually because of the corporation doing contact factory products or internal factors of cutting corners for the sake of profit

Bought Ritz from Woolies last weeek, just checked it's made in Indonesia, should I open this one by your standard?

There's always (nearly) a choice. Have a look at other options next to the ones you always buy. Perhaps as others have suggested, widen your store selection too.

Crushed garlic - Coles homebrand are made in China, but next to it on the shelf for a little bit more is an Aussie owned & grown jar (black & green label). For something that I buy 2-3 times a year, why not support local? might cost me an extra $2-3 a year if I only but it on special.

Too many people looking for the cheapest option, and then they and others are put out of work because of offshoring.

  • I think you'll find over the coming years that Chinese manufacturing will be the more superior of bulk manufacturing as wages rise and other-poorer countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, African countries & Indonesia begin to amp up their manufacturing due to their low labour cost.

Made in China food still needs to meet strict regulations in order to be imported into Australia. You may find that the tastes are changing - but that's simply because the Australian market is too small. We will begin to see more food that is originally formulated for other larger markets such as the US that we have decided to import as Australia is no longer able to produce food at a reasonable price.

I would not trust any food item manufactured in China. Regardless of the supposed food standards and regulations, the bottom line is there is a total lack of caring and empathy for your fellow human beings in farming over there, it's a business with the primary aim of making money. Just Google garlic farming, gutter oil, pig farming, milk contamination in China to get a clue…

As with others above, where reasonably possible, I pay a few $$$ extra and get a locally made product. Its becoming harder, but still possible especially in Aldi.

  • my mrs is made in china

Most if not all of the Streets branded ice cream are made in China, even the icy poles - I dont get why it needs to be made in china when icy poles are just water, sugar and some flavouring….

    • Yes the ingredients are the same but everything else cost more:
      - Manufacturing plant setup.
      - Rental
      - Energy
      - Maintenance
      - Labour

Why do you think we don't manufacture cars in Victoria anymore when all the parts are the same?

  • It had been like this for years. It's just that you only realise it now. It's not just China. Soon you will find more and more from Vietnam/Malaysia/Thailand/India.

  • +1

Ritz and Pringles have been made overseas for awhile, also usually Australian made is cheaper. I don't consider Pringles or Ritz good value.

  • I specifically look at any new food brands I purchase to make sure they're not manufactured in China. I didn't even bother to look at my previous brand favourites to see if they've changed origin. If the people of China don't even want to consume their own produce, i definitely don't want to be either.

I wouldn't even feed my dog anything made in China (or most other Asian countries), certainly wouldn't eat it myself.

The worst are the basa fillets that Colesworth sell, see heaps of people buy them.

    • I guess you never eat out then?

      • I don't think Scab is the type of person who waltzes into your local food court and orders a curry laksa or hainanese chicken rice…

        • what?

      • perhaps scab is a vegan that only eat locally grown organic food.

        • maybe he only grows and eats his own organic food

        • -1

I dont see nothinhg wrong with what Scab said.

If you eat out, dont eat no name fish and chips etc. Get fillets from known aus. sources.

If you eat at nicer places chances are you're eating aussie produce.

If you eat at shitty places then thats on you.

  • Free trade agreements maybe ?

  • Buy and eat whole foods (unprocessed foods) which are healthier and more likely to be Australian.

  • have you noticed this is china anymore?

  • Well, that's the last time I buy biscuit products from Aldi without looking at the label! Prista Crispbread - Made in China. They are now in the bin…
