Toyota Camy Hybrid Vs Mazda CX3 Vs Mazda CX5

Hi All,

Just confusing to make my choice. Thought should poll it out and find out the majority to make my choice based on the poll opinion. I am looking to upgrade my car. I have made my mind between Toyota Camry Hybrid or Mazda CX3 or Mazda CX5. It will be a used car between 2013 to 2015 models.

Camry is impressive with Fuel Economy but have been driving Sedan throughout my life and having family and a kid now, thinking could be good reason to upgrade to SUV rather than Sedan again.

Mazda CX3 or 5 impresses me with features and being SUV it is comfortable with loading and unloading children stroller and other things.
But Fuel Economy could go upto 9 litres in Urban and which is where I mostly commute.

With Fuel Economy, I am looking something that can give me 100kms for 6 - 7 litres in urban.

Please do post other better choices if you can think off too.

Budget is between upto $20000 (Thought of Diesel Cars but overheads and maintenance are more compared to petrol although fuel efficiency looks good and comparatively petrol cheaper at times than diesel).

Help me out with the poll oz bargainers?

Thank You in advance.

  • CX3 is tiny - have you driven one?

    CX5 is good.

I know nothing about Camry's. I prefer to drive a car, rather than grey. I have owned bland, but never that bland.

Can’t go wrong with the CX5 Diesel- we have one and it gets decent fuel economy with the i-stop activated - just over 7 litres. Very user friendly and is adequate for a baby and toddler and all their paraphernalia. (We will probably switch to a car with a bit more room in the back as the kids get older.)

There is no way a CX5 would do this even CX3 would have trouble, I think you have to refine your wants and needs.

You did not specify I budget, but seeing as you are looking at 2013 -15 you're probably on the 12-18K side of things.

    • Budget is upto 20K..

Cross off CX3 for a family car.

Then work out if you actually need an SUV (high clearance, etc), and is it worth the extra money and petrol.

If you mainly drive urban I would say Camry.

No full petrol powered SUV will give you 6-7L/100km in real time driving.
Figures on paper are done in "controlled environments" which could mean anything and driving style all play a part.
Your best bet for fuel efficiency is any hybrid car so in your above list of cars, the Camry.

    • my full petrol powered VW Tiguan is actually able to give me 5-7L/100km btw.

    2018 Camry or go home.

  • Why not try RAV4.?

    • Also RAV4 Hybrid! Kluger Hybrid! none of them coming to Aus, I guess hybrid don't sell well enough here :(

      • Watch this space in 2018…

  • a Cx5 with 9l/100kms in urban area ??? Anyone who owns one please confirm?

Sound a bit too low ?

We get about 8-8.5 with a Forrester in Canberra, so seems doable?

      7.4l/100kms on a diesel CX5 60% hwy 40% city driving.

  • CX3 is pointless (too small)

So between CX5 and Camry Hybrid you can choose fuel economy or practicality of SUV shape. CX5 you won't be much under 10 L/100 km in the city

  • 20000 is a lot for only 1 car.

You must be new to Ozbargain?

      Anything below 80,000 isn't a worthwhile investment =P

Look into a Prius or Prius V. They look like a science experiment but they are roomy thrifty and comfortable. You can probably find a used Prius V 2012-3 for around 20k

I got a 2017 diesel Nissan qashqai a couple months ago. Very happy with it so far. Getting 4.8-5 L/100km on the highway and 5.5 running around (country) town with a bit of traffic

It's bigger than the cx3 And has plenty of back seat room. Bigger boot too. A bit smaller than the cx5. I got an ex demo with 500 km it for $26k (down from $31k rrp) but if you're going 2nd hand the 2014-2017 models are all identical in terms of specs so just get something with the age/km/price you are after.

Only downside was no CarPlay/android auto but i installed a Sony unit from super cheap for $500.

  • Thank you all for your comments and time taken for that…
i read through those and made a note accordingly…

Think you're being a bit optimistic with the desired fuel consumption. My old housemate had a manual base model Mazda 3 (~2013 model) and it usually sat on an average of 7.6-7.7l/100km with a genuine mix of urban and rural driving (she made short urban trips during the week then made a 350 km return motorway drive each weekend). I don't know if the CX3's engine is any more efficient but I would imagine any efficiency improvements would be offset by being less aerodynamic.

A work colleague just picked up a second-from-the-base CX3 for about $27k. It's a lot smaller in person than what I thought it would be. Wouldn't be my first choice for a family car.

The CX5s hold their value well so I'm not sure what kind of example you could get for $20k.

Camry Hybrid would be bland, but its a good size, fuel efficient, and is probably better buying second-hand than a Mazda.
