NBN Skymuster Woes (Need More Data)

Recently I have been moved out to some farm land as work accomodation with the rest of the crew, we all came to the conclusion that we need a internet connection so during our downtime after work we can relax with some netflix.

The issue is Australia's NBN is a joke, we have 10 people and the maximum data we can get is 300gb per month due to satellite being our only choice so I have come here to ask. How would you buffer your connection, I feel like we need at least 500gb per month for all of us (50gb each) I am thinking the 300gb Skymuster plan and then a couple phones on Telstra with a data pool. But maybe someone with more experience can help.

There is NO adsl/cable connection or fixed wireless available. Only satellite and a Telstra tower less then 2km away.

This is paid for by us and not the company so trying to keep the cost low.

Is it possible to sign up to two separate accounts - double the cost of course, but double the allowance?

    • Fair use policy for the NBN says only 1 connection per permanent dwelling, That was the first thing I tried too.

If you have more than one block and billable address you can have the dish installed there.

Hint the NBN don't check if that permanent dwelling is council approved as it would cost $$ for the certificate from council.

If you were [hypothetically of course - I would never use this method to get something that our city cousins take for granted] to have a shed with a solar panel and 200Ah battery on this separate title you could use a couple of yagi antennas to send the signal to your house through a wireless network.

Alternatively you could move the whole set up to a new spot in the same micro cell spot beam radius (50-100 Km) and use it without the knowledge of NBN - Do not attempt this unless you know how to setup a satellite dish.

        • Hmm, Hypothetically a Yagi antenna could work with my Optus plan on my IPad, Town is only 40KM away and I can get a bar or two of reception on my IPad if I stand on the roof. Of course this is also hypothetical and I would never attempt this.

    vivid wireless ?

    • If OP is eligible in the area it might be worth it.
$90 for unlimited data seems decent, but the speeds when they're shared across 10 people will be pretty bad.

I assume that you might not have a good way of provisioning the data either, so someone could use up the 300gb in the first week, then everyone would have to suffer for the rest of the month.

      • Sadly no vivid-wireless coverage either, Kinda sucks with the tower so close.

    • he said its a Telstra tower so probably not? otherwise doesn't Optus have a 100GB mobile plan which could be good.

I actually have that plan on my IPad, however I don't get any decent service from Optus where I am

  • that's a lot of data!! maybe you could try to prove to the nbn that lots of people live there so you need multiple connections? why don't you just download some movies now to watch later, satellite is expensive unless you are studying at get 50GB/month free.

If you don't mind slow speeds you could get some Belong sims with 5GB for $25 BUT when that data runs out you get unlimited data that is shaped (good enough to download some low quality movies, by my calculations (might be wrong) you can download 1GB in 5.8 hours at 50kbps.)

    • That's good to know, you could download a few movies!

I actually have half a dozen belong sims from the jbhifi deal, might test them. Thanks.
