Refund for Train (Public Transport) Delay [Sydney]

Hi all

Wondering what are your thoughts on getting full or partial refund when travels gets delayed ?

What i noticed is that Sydney trains are constantly getting MAJOR delays every now and then.

Considering amount of weekend trackwork , Opal charges and available technology for refund , shouldnt we deserve a partial or full refund in case of late running trains or buses?

If person does not have valud ticket then they pay few hundred dollar fine.

With same principle , if person pays valid fare , shouln't his/her journey be complete in time ( as per SLA ) and any delay should be compensate?

Please note this is not to complain about over crowded or filthy ( graffity / air con etc ) transport on certain instances.

You have a poor choice of poll answers.

It's not that it's "No happy to pay full fare" as I'm not but it's not necessarily Yes either. The costs will be recovered by other means. Public transport is very heavily subsidized. If we paid more in the way of fares then yes we could be entitled to a refund for a delayed journey but to pay under $3 for a multi mode (bus and train or train and tram) journey it is very cheap.

What caused the delay? Traffic issues aren't the operators fault.

    • nah they are on holidays apparently

    • Option 3 is , i am happy to pay full amount even my train is delayed by 1 hr.

In sydney , train fare are around $4 on an average

Delays are caused for technical , mechanical and by all other reasons

Meanwhile there is almost 4 million or more subsidy on sports ticket which generally include FREE transport to the venue (i read this few days beforeon SMH but not 100% certain )

The current delays are caused completely by the mismanagement of Transport NSW. They implemented a new timetable, that is so tight there is no room for error. And staffing levels are so short they are working large amounts of overtime. This causes fatigue, which in turn increases sick rates.

If you believe TfNSW, 70 people called in sick yesterday. 70 from a potential train crew staff of 3300. That is not alot of people calling in sick, and not being able to be replaced to bring an entire system to its knees.

    Hahaha.

What next? Refund of road license for traffic jams?

There have been and there still are structural problems with the Sydney train network. Unachievable SLAs will be ignored or fudged around. So refunds will never happen, except you might get a free day for major collapse.

    • Dont know but never offered free ride. Always paid heaps to Uber with surcharge or childcare who start charging $1 for min rate after 6 pm.

usually the trains are usually good, i don't think the cost of the train fare is the issue. more of a problem if you miss a plane or work etc. if they were penalised for being late it might encourage them to drive dangerously.

In Melbourne they are penalised for late running services. They change to express services where they skip stops. This way they make destination on time, even if the service has been compromised. Happens on all modes, every day. (I think there's been some fines against this recently though?)

On trams you get told it's the end of the line when there's still another 10 stops. The tram turns around and the passengers are trapped waiting for the next tram that wasn't late.

On trains they just start skipping stops so if you needed to get off you have to go back. Sometimes they'll tell you they'll be skipping so you know to get off early, but not always.

On buses they just stop picking up more passengers it continue to drop off passengers on board.

    Anybody knows what happened here?

AM: A passenger disturbance at Parramatta caused delays to 21 trains.

    • Does it look good?

Note: The number of services delayed may change following the investigation of each incident.

So point is when technology is available to identify impacted Opal customers , one can setup auto mated refund jobs.

This is part of customer service which you will see with every business

If there was a quick an easy way to offer refunds for inconvenienced passengers, then refunds are great.

I'd hate to waste my time (after already being late to work) to fill out a form to get a few dollars back in 6-8 weeks for example.

If there were significant train delays and heaps of people got stuffed around, then perhaps offering free travel days as compensation for all passengers the next business day?

It is frustrating that Sydney Trains just can't get it right and are continually in the news for the wrong reasons.

Today for example, Sydney Train's excuse for running at a 'reduced frequency' (meaning entire services cancelled) was sick train drivers.

I've never heard of a business blaming its lowered productivity on unwell employees and not having any contingency plans. Imagine airports, schools, emergency services that are unable to fulfil its obligations to society because of ill employees. There could be literal riots if this was the case.

Some days I feel like Sydney Trains change their names to this so people could stop using #sh*ttyrail. Oh wait, it's still a thing on Twitter! /rant

Bit funny as site says " Due to staff availability and earlier incidents at Gordon, Sefton, Penrith and Yagoona, "

      Staff Availability or Unavailability..he he

    • Melbourne had a network wide train shutdown last year where services just stopped running. Some people were stuck on trains for hours.

Anyway, they automatically refunded anyone that used their myki to touch onto the train network between certain hours.

This, however, wasn't the best solution for everyone affected as it occurred prior to and during the evening peak and many people found alternative ways to get home so they didn't touch onto the train network at all. Even those that took trams or buses didn't get refunded.

Where is Option 4. We should get paid for catching public transport?

  • Me, my family and infant were assaulted on the train and they refused to give a refund. Absolute pathetic servive. I think they take a firm stand on no refunds if the journey was completed.
