Without a launcher you can't do much at all.
As someone who doesn't think they've ever used launchers, why can't you do much without? What can they do extra?
why can't you do much without
A launcher controls how yours apps and menus display/work. They are like the front end of your android phone. You can pretty much change the entire user experience by customizing the way the menu, home layout, home button and gestures work. This app has changed my experience on a crappy software to tweaking it to make it way better
An example of this is swipe up for apps. Samsung has only just added this but this launcher has been doing it for a long time. I also use swipe down for settings, infinity scroll through apps and double tap to lock.
What phone do you have? If you unlock your phone, you see a home screen. This is a launcher.
A launcher is equivalent to Windows/Linux/OSX.
It's the GUI you see/use everyday on your phone. You can also add accessibility features to launchers as well. E.g tweak a launcher to have big text and icons if you're vision impaired.
Microsoft's Launchers adds more "Microsoft" features to your phone, such as instantly sending documents and images to your Windows 10 PC and allowing to continue working where you left off.
@SuiCid3: Technically not really. The GUI is literally the Desktop environment that's built on top of the GUI layer of an OS. So Windows has Explorer which is built ontop of the GUI layer. Linux has things like KDE/GNOME/MATE ontop of the display managers like XORG.
All these operating systems still work and function without the desktop experience. The dekstop experience just makes it easier to navigate.
In the case of Android, the launcher is a gateway app to the rest of the phone. The rest of the phone still functions etc. If you get a call without a launcher, the phone app still shows up with a gui.
@SuiCid3: Not a great analogy. A launcher is much more like a skin over the top of the operating system.
@Alex Bunyan: Very true. More like the Winamp skins during 90s.
Using launchers is as useless as …….
@Alex Bunyan: No not really, it's just an app that has shortcuts on it. It doesn't affect the operating system at all.
@gentlecrack: No you are thinking of themes.
@OnlinePred: No. “Winamp skins.”
@gentlecrack: yep and the only thing similar in Android would be a theme or a skin pack or something
@SuiCid3: Windows/Linux/MacOS/OS X are operating systems, you could argue the Windows desktop/Start menu and Mac dock are the equivalent to launchers.
I just set display off 1 minute shut cover why do you tap lock?? You'd think phones would have all these built in by now anyhow, like google.
See below.
Agree SS has great experience one now, no point using them! i can get to apps easily.
So launcher makes your Android runs faster?
They can, but not always. Custom launchers will almost always use more RAM than default, since launchers are processes / applications themselves.
The real question is if using more RAM on your phone will cause it to lag. The effect on performance is phone and launcher specific/dependent since it's a process. If the launcher is less than 5MB in size, it is a performance launcher and should improve response times - customisation launchers on the other hand are for UI / aesthetics and rely on devices with more memory to offset the performance hit. Phones with beefy RAMs i.e 2GB and above will feel little or no lag, whereas the phones with less than 1GB are likely to feel the lag.
Once the stock launcher isn't running, it will not be kept in ram.
Also RAM isn't a good indication of performance. I.E I have Note 8 with 6gb ram, if I run the stock launcher, it appears to be faster than Nova due to animations and probably other things. The same goes for the Pixel launcher which appears to run faster and smoother than nova. Nova is often regarded as the fastest launcher. So it's really up to how fast the actual launcher is rather than how much ram it uses (to an extent)
Unused ram is wasted ram. Ram is freed and filled so quickly with modern devices that it's not even worth mentioning any more.
It's an old idea that harks back to when it took quite considerable time to read data from storage. Not relevant any more.
@Tony76: Well it could be of concern on devices with 4gb or less as they are actually impacted by this. But those with 6gb or more yes I agree, there is zero issues.
Moto G4 Play here, 2gb ram, works fine. Launchers don't use much ram.
@Tony76: I know it works fine, but once you start loading other apps, you will find the launcher has to reload, or perhaps other apps need to reload. I mean running Chrome on 2gb guarantees reloading after you opened another app.
Sure, and it all happens so fast it's a moot point. We're talking milliseconds here, not seconds.
@Tony76: Reloading an app takes seconds. Tested on Pixel XL and Note 8. Many apps need to download data which takes time too.
@OnlinePred: I'm quite sure you won't notice a speed difference in any modern phone if you install this. If you believe this to be untrue, don't install it. Simple.
@Tony76: I'm not even sure what we are arguing any more.
You said "Unused ram is wasted ram. Ram is freed and filled so quickly with modern devices that it's not even worth mentioning any more.", which is mostly true, but if an app needs to reload, it is slower than retrieving it from memory and loading/downloading information.
But in regards to this launcher, it has no point as launchers don't use much RAM. BUT on low Ram phones, this could be something to consider.
@OnlinePred: Sure, but you mentioned devices with less than 4gb of ram possibly being affected. I have a Moto G4 Play with 2gb ram and have not noticed any slowdown whatsoever. I just checked and see that Nova launcher is using 32 mb of ram, which is 1.6% of 2gb. I'm not sure what N launcher uses, but it would be very similar to Nova. You might notice a slowdown on sub 1gb phones…..but of course if you have a phone like that, you'd be minimising everything you can.
Edit - We're not arguing, we're having a good discussion. Have a good day mate!
No way
Nah. Stock android is for men, Launchers are for kids.
You use a pixel without a launcher? Hardcore!!! How do you use your phone?
The latest Marshmallow? Why do I feel like I'm in 2015?
Best launcher, no ads and free…. Evie
thanx just installed and will give it a go, I hope the unread counts work
What do you guy's think is the better launcher "N Launcher Pro" or "Nova" in terms of being user friendly ? At present I am looking to use one with an LG G5 H850 when it arrives. Been use to using the Google one with other phone.
I use Apex Launcher which has been really good, consistent updates with 8.0 and Pixel-specific functionality.
I prefer Apex then to Nova
Thanks
Will have a look at the Apex LauncherJust had a quick look at Apex is it the Pro version that your using ?
If you have an Android phone already, just download this one while it is free. You can uninstall if you want and it will always be free for you to try later.
Yes good idea Ta
Keep using the google one. If anything go get the Pixel 2 modded launcher, its really smooth and great to use. Better performance than Nova.
i use nova prime.runs good on s5
i got 2 wifi speeds at home. Can this app be setup to choose the stronger signal or this isn't the app to do this. Thanks.
No. This app doesn't manage Wifi connections.
You need to look into workflow automation apps such as Tasker or AutomateIt or Llama.
I can't even group apps in the app menu.
I use Evie with my lollipop
not free now?
Don't launchers use more ram?
