Bought Overpriced Digital Version of Game from EB Games

Don't think I can do anything now but just want to share my stupid mistake.

I usually prefer to buy physical copy version of the game from retail stores (JB Hi-Fi primarily) because I'd like to be able to trade it. Yesterday I was looking for Batman Arkham VR since I just got my PS VR set, while I couldn't find it on JB Hi-Fi I went to EB Games and the staff told me that they only sell digital version of the game. The staff told me that the game is $29.95, thinking it should be around the same price in PS network since they are all digital version of the game, I bought it on the spot without checking.

Later I found that the game was on sale on PS network and the price was $17.95 :( I went back to the shop and try to ask for a refund but the staff told me that they can't refund digital version of the game since I could have copied down the code, which is fair enough.. and then I asked for a price match, which can't be done as they only price match retail shops T-T

Don't make the same mistake I did!

Cheers

You're in the wrong place to warn people Most people here know you CHECK PRICES before you hand money over.

Well maybe I'm looking for a way to redeem my sins as a ozbargainer

You purposely went back to the shop for $12?

That subsequent act is worse than is worse than the original.

    • I work closeby. Also it is not only about the money :)

I mean, if you can get it I don't see the issue here?

      $12, aka 40%

Mate I get it can be a tad annoying to see something cheaper than you bought it for that day, but I don't know why would think EB could price match an online only store. EB pays staff, rent, insurance, electricity, etc, whereas the PS store pays next to nothing in overheads.

    • They are selling a coupon to redeem a game from PS store. My guess is they are getting a cut from Sony by helping them to promote the game and selling the digital version of it. If Sony is doing a sale on the digital version I think is fair for them to sync their price too since it is essentially the same thing.

    • EB Games should price match Sony, it makes sense.
They don't spend any money on staff, rent, insurance, electricity, tax etc etc when it comes to Electronic Sales. And if you say they do, then I would say Sony's overhead is at least x10 larger so there goes your argument.

Just because it makes sense, doesn't mean it will happen though.
OP realised that next time, he will check the price of the game when he is in the EB Games shop, from his phone at various different sites such as OzBargain, JB Hifi, Target, Big W, PSN, eBay etc etc.

I do that all the time, it saves me a ton, but I make sure to pick up physical copies of games… and if possible I grab the GOTY version because it usually has all the DLC stored on the disc which makes it doubly-good when I'm trading/passing games to family. You can also grab used games on gumtree at great prices, just make sure the disc isn't scratched first.

GOTY version is a good tip, will keep that in mind :)

      • How does EB Games not have to pay staff, rent, insurance, tax, etc on Electronic Sales?

From the OP "I went to EB Games and the staff told me that they only sell digital version of the game", so OP walked into a physical store (rent, insurance, electricity, etc), and "the staff told me" (wages, super, etc).

Sony directly may have more overheads when it comes to the production and distribution of the game, but they get money from every single copy of the game that is sold. EB only make a small cut on each copy that store sells.

  • Did you use the code? I worked at EB and I guarantee if you stamp your feet enough you WILL get a refund

    • I had gave up and used the code unfortunately :( The EB staff is certain that there is no way I can get a refund for digital copy of a game.

  • Damn son, you got conned! Think of EB as like used car salesmen. They'll tell you anything to get your business so that you don't go down the road and buy from the next guy who could well be offering a better deal. And as well all know EB never have the best deal so it's a case of price match or die whenever dealing with them.
