BlackVue Dash Cam Mount Melted on 2nd Day

Hey all
I pulled the trigger on BlackVue 750 2 channel Dashcams $419 and had them installed through autobarn $160 on the new car.

The 2nd day after getting them installed the double sided tape the Dashcams came with has already melted and won't hold the cam up anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to mount it that will stay on/not melt?

Pretty disappointing to pay that much and they can't even handle the sun.
Every time they fall they tear the plastic insulation of the cable.

Ps. If anyone can help me with how the app works thatd be great (couple of qs)

  • the double sided tape the Dashcams came

is this a 3m brand tape?

    Talk to Autobarn

    Failed to install correctly

    • I'll get a pic next time it falls off to show the tape. It is clear. Unfortunately I move away tomorrow and I'm sure they won't give a crap about it anyway.

They gave me the car back with trim still not fixed back on properly, he couldn't get my fuse box cover back on (didn't fix it) , and he nicked the BlackVue pry tool.
I went back for the tool and the trim fixed up today.

  • That's really odd. I gone through about 5 different blackvue models and never had an issues. Gone through many summers.
Can you post a pic of the double sided tape?

perhaps op forgot to clean with metho before affixing the mount to the windscreen.

The dashcam was installed by the retailer (Autobarn).

        • well that doesn't make sense at all.

the 3m vhb sticks like think else. we nearly broke the windscreen the last time we tried to remove the mount. we had to use pliers and flatheads.

        • Yep I going to take a guess the installer (autobarn) didn't do a good job of mounting it. The double sided tape blackvue use is very good.
It' was a bit*h trying to take the mount off when I got a new car

      • Yep the blackvue double tape is clear. Sounds like it's the right one.
Can only guess they did a shat job installing it.
Maybe didn't get it right the first time, kept adjusting the mount or whatever reason to kill the tape stickiness.
I did it myself so I can vounch the tape do work well and they are a bitch to take off too

        • I doubt they'll five me new tape. Nothing they'll do without a fuss.
          Annoying

In my experience double sided tape seems to improve with age. Fresh stuff doesn’t cope with heat well, but I’ve had stuff that after a few re-sticks seems to hold forever more - even after significant heat again.

While it’s not ideal, and better tape might do a better job what you have has just been through extreme heat and may not have settled yet.

I cannot stress this enough… “isopropyl alcohol”… make sure you clean everything with it that you are going to put sticky pads on. Glass cleaner isn’t enough. Any money says they just stuck it up there and whatever was on the window is now in the adhesive mount and it just won’t stick now…

I use the 3M clear gel like sticky pads to remount any glass mounted things. If I can find the model number of this stuff, I’ll repost it…

Just make sure you clean everything with isopropyl alcohol before you even think about remounting it…

    • I'd love a link for what to get for the one the installer dodgied up. I'll grab some alcohol from bunnings thanks

I use 3m VHB on my blackvue camera mount and it works great! I avoided using the original blackvue tape as I wanted to save that for a new car but alas I'm still driving the same car 2 years later with the 3m VHB still holding the camera solidly.

        • +1 for VHB…

Oh yeah, just had a look at some of the spare sticky mount pads and they are all grey with VHB emblazoned on them…

Just type it into eBay and there are heaps of sellers with precut packs for sale. I use them for mounting dash cams and action cams.

  • As others have said the tape gets better with age.

If the tape is subjected to some really hot weather soon after installing I find it generally fails.

Just buy some more double sided tape from bunnings or ebay.

  • My Blackvue is stuck on real good as others have stated.

Did Autobarn, give you back the original box and it's contents? I remember seeing an extra double sided tape in the box, maybe you can redo it yourself, but do it correctly this time by cleaning the surface first, and giving it time to set, as others have suggested.
