Got an iPad Pro 10.5 256GB w/Accessories (WI-FI). Planning on Selling It within a Few Months. Any Tips?

G'day fellow Ozbargainers,

I've got 5 month-old iPad Pro 10.5, 256GB, Wi-Fi-only model, w/ an Apple Pencil; an STM Goods, DUX rugged case and a couple of spare, matte screen protectors; as well as 2-year Apple Care warranty (now 19 months).

As an artist/animator I'm personally disappointed with how slippery the Apple Pencil is, especially when drawing on such a relatively small screen. Thus I'm thinking of selling it and getting a Galaxy Book 12 (or saving up for its successor) or a 2018 model Surface Pro. Bare in mind, this is the first time I've sold tech privately.

The iPad itself is in extremely good condition, with maybe a few subtle scratches on the Apple logo on the back. Although the case is quite scratched on the transparent, plastic back.

I originally paid $1459 in total from the Apple Store for it and $80 for the case. You guys have any suggestions on how I can sell this thing and its peripherals for the best value? I was thinking of something around the lines of $840-940 on Gumtree or maybe an auction on Ebay. I am living in the Brisbane area, but I'm also thinking of advertising to college students at QUT and or UQ.

If you've got any handy tips, feel free to shoot em.' Thanks.

Apart from the usual Gumtree, ebay and facebook bss?
Hmm I don’t know, post on a forum for bites through pm?
Be sure to include (preferably bold) your item’s details, condition, asking price and location
    Oh wait..

I'll speak only of the peripherals, they are basically worth 25% of what you paid as soon as you grabbed them, mostly coz there is so much second hand choice and brand new stuff that's cheaper. And they are useless after a the original device runs its course.

I personally never splurge on peripherals, I always buy the cheapest, because I believe they are worthless in no time.

    Just IMHO

  • Keep in mind Kogan sell them new for 999.

    • Not without existing Apple Care warranty they don't.

For selling second hand that doesn’t matter much. The accessories and apple care won’t add much to the price.

If you put a plastic screen protector on the ipad, it may increase the resistance of the pen. It is usually a downside when buying phone screen protectors (for Galaxy Note series) but in your case, it could be useful.

    • I used a Ghost Armor screen protector previously, just shortly after I bought the iPad fresh. I removed it in an attempt to restore the friction of the screen in relation to the pen, no luck.

As I hinted, matte screen protectors, including the PaperLike which I currently have installed, barely increase friction in any effective way at reducing slipperiness. It's a general consequence of drawing/writing with a completely hard tip on a completely solid surface.

I see. Then the S-pen should work well for you. It is like a semi-hard rubber type of material.

As for selling, I find there are a lot of low ballers on Gumtree. And people will sure ask for a discount. Why not try both Gumtree and Ebay. Put a slightly higher price, just over a thousand on Gumtree. IF you cant get the price you want, then put a lower price on Ebay.

Universities sometimes would have boards where people put adverts for rental and selling stuff. You could try there if you are staying near QUT or UQ.

        • Thanks for the advice.

Go into JB Hi Fi and try out the Surface Pro before you buy it, so you can see if the friction is how you want it. I'm no artist but I love doodling with mine, or marking up PDFs.

Don't sell it on eBay or you could get scammed (not to mention the outrageous fee %). Go Gumtree/local newspaper classifieds & cash on pickup only. Making paper flyers to stick up at the local uni is a great idea too.

Yup, I've already tried out the Surface, the Galaxy Book and their pens plenty of times. Their rubber nibs give you better fine control than the Apple Pencil.
It's a good thing you pointed out the extra fees and risks that come with selling on eBay. Thanks.

Oh and if you find the Surface Pens too expensive I just bought a third party one on eBay for $48 I think which works great and came with a spare replacement nib too. I was apprehensive at first that it was going to be crap, not work, or break but the seller had 100% positive feedback and the pen works fine so far so have no complaints.

  • Hey MadGazza, have you listed the iPad already? Keen to discuss outside of this thread as I also live in Brisbane area and am interested in it. Let me know :)

    • Nah, I've actually been reluctant to, especially since I've built a new, Ryzen PC for my animation work. I've decided that I'm willing to wait just a bit longer for better devices to hit the market. Sorry about that.

How much were you thinking of offering if it's okay I ask?

      • That’s all good. Totally understand. I was gonna offer around the price you listed in your original post, circa $800 or more
