Oil Filters with Visable Glue - Normal?

Hi all,

I purchased 2x Oil Filters for my vehicle a few weeks ago from eBay, however they appear to show glue around the rim of the filter. I almost always order filters online and have done so for many years, however this is the first time I have received filters like this.

Does anyone know if it's safe to use the filters in their current condition. I have contacted the seller however they claim it's normal (I disagree). I currently have an eBay case open which I have the option to ask for eBay to step in, however I'm not 100% sure if that is necessary.

See below for links to the filters

Thank you.

it's a few bucks , not worth risking it

    looks dodgy to me

    • Yeah I don't like it to be completely honest, I have purchased Ryco and GM filters previously and that's the first time I have seen one like that.

  • You should see my Prius's oil filter. Just a paper cartridge with glue on each end. Some brands have a bit of rubber covering the ends (thus hiding the glue), others don't.

  • Counterfeit?
    a) Maybe purchase a genuine one for reference
    b) Go to your local Supercheap/Autobarn/Repco parts supplier and see what there ones look like

    • Funny enough it's a GM filter (92142003) which are only available online and from Holden, however I have purchased Ryco filters from Supercheap and Repco, none of which have had glue coming from the rim.

  • I'd be suspicious, are these filters branded?

I suggest you buy an OEM filter from the dealership to see how they look/feel/weigh compared to your cheapie. Quite often they're not that expensive either, mine are cheaper at the dealer than aftermarket retail.

    • I'm not confident in putting them on my car to be honest. Yeah they are GM (Holden) filters, I have purchased identical filters many times with no issues, same goes for Ryco filters however this is the first GM Filters that have had that problem.

  • Funny enough it's a GM filter, I order them every year and that's the first one I have had with that issue.

I don't trust it, may be genuine or conterfiet not 100% sure but I wouldn't expect filters to look like that, I have probably ordered 15-20 filters in the last 5 years and this is the first time I have had that happen. This is the first time ordering from this particular seller but I'd say it will be my last.

So does everyone agree that it doesn't look right?

I have asked for a refund from the seller and/or to return the filters and get a refund, I'm just not happy putting them on my car, I'm broke as is can't really afford for something to go wrong which may or may not result in engine failure.

eBay sided with me almost instantly, I will apparently be receiving a refund within the next 48 hours.
      I'll purchase my filters elsewhere

      Good result :)
