Which cheap phone with good camera?

My wife wants a new phone and the requirements are as follows:

Good camera
Android
Sub $200
Sub 5.5" screen
Ideally available in Australia

Any recommendations? The camera is the main thing. She's got a Redmi 3S now and the camera has become terrible (but was okay out of the box).

"Which cheap phone with good camera?"

    is like

    Which iphone with reasonable price?

    • Well, there are some Nokias that will do just that, unfortunately not with android though.

    Good camera
    Sub $200

You can probably only have one of the above.

Also, a similar question was asked recently with a similar budget, so check out the responses here

    • Thanks, though I think the band 28 would limit the field somewhat (given that it's a running joke on ozbargain).

          @c0balt:
OP shops, at the pubs when they have ladies' nights (girls drink for free, uncommon these days), the refund department at IKEA, the Tightarse appreciation society… Lots of places!

  • You'll need to spend more to make her happy, suggest the Moto G5 Plus.

    • The Zuk Z2 used to go for around $200. Would that be a good option (and are they still available)?

  • Check out Xiaomi a1 , good phone , cost $190-200 USD on special from overseas , I guess that camera is good (do your own research).

  • sony have pretty good cameras in their phones

maybe get a second hand xperia or something?

    • Having owned the Z3 and Z5 previously (and now pixel2) - their cameras are much better on paper than in practice. Software is slow, postprocessing is weird. I wouldn't recommend an xperia if OP wants a decent camera although the rest of the phone is pretty damn good.

      • I'm happy with z5, prefer it to note I had previously. I guess I've never had a faster camera to know I'm missing out??

        • Ignorance is bliss ;)

Maybe comparing the z5 to the pixel 2 which is a 2 years newer phone is unfair but this thing actually makes me think of leaving my proper camera at home!

  • If you want a good camera, buy a camera. If you want a good phone, get a phone. Trying to get both on the cheap is not going to end well.

    • with a sub 200 budget … no matter how you go , still not going to end well.

best to have a working camera on phone that is with you everyday, afterall a camera is only good if you bring it with you.

    • I reckon phone cameras are great if you don't need a zoom lens. Sure beats carrying an extra, bulkier gadget

  • I really like my ASUS zenfone 2. Can get it on ebay imported for $180 with 64gb storage. I paid $250 for it a year ago and I think it was a good purchase back then.

  • Nexus 5X.
Quite cheap, but very dated today.

Better camera than most mid-rangers, but not as good as the flagships: iPhone 7, S7/S8, Note8, U11/Pixel, iPhone X, Pixel2.

Be extra cautious of Dual-Camera Android phones, overall they take worse photos than Single-Camera phones, but there are exceptions.

  • Mine is a oppo A57, has the best camera specs of most phones if not all.

    16MP selfie camera
    13MP rear camera
ColorOS 3.0, based on Android 6.0
    5.2 inch screen
    $296.00 AU

  • Second that on the Oppo.
I currently have an F1S, which is superseded now (by the A57, above).
The reviews of the camera mostly say that it is ordinary, but I find it to be very good, though I work in publishing and I can tweak the pics in Photoshop.
I recently took a bunch of technical pics for a magazine, test pics with the Oppo and 'real' pics with a digital camera (which was 13mb). And to be honest, the phone pics were better quality and those were the ones that were published.
Better than my last iPhone, by far.
One thing though, the spec camera app is rubbish, I switched to Open Camera asap and it works fine.
You can probably spot one online for the mid-$200s, but a lot of the features went into the A57.
Mind you, I have just ordered the new Huawei Honor 7X…
